was it because he couldn't turn left and Hansel did?
In real life it's actually possible, but not as shown. He would need to stretch the outer side of the briefs down his pant leg and over his foot, and then pull that back up again, and then do the same thing with the other side.
Actually, after pulling it back up the first leg he could just let it fall down and off the second leg, but that would not be pulling it out over his trouser-waist as shown.

it would be easier if you're short and fat, because your legs would be shorter and your waistband would be larger, so you'd have less stretching of the waistband to do to get it over your first leg. Then you can let it fall off your second leg and drag it up through the pant leg. But it can't be done with conventional briefs as portrayed in the movie.
