Such a great show and such a shame it didn't get more seasons!
My first impressions for this show wasn't good. After awhile, I watched an episode where the bully and his lackeys beat up the main three preteen characters and stole their Halloween candy and that made me almost hate the show. Then I saw another episode where the same bully almost kills the nerdy kid because he had an allergic reaction to peanuts when the asshole puts them in his sandwich. The bully then feels remorse for almost killing him and never picks on him and his friends again. From that point on, I embraced the show. It's really well written and it actually feels like you're in the early 1980s, going to school with them. I love the post-disco era and the attitude of the parents and how times have changed since their youthful days. Aside from the bully, most of the characters are so likable. This isn't like a Stephen King story where all the adults are just as bad as the bullies. To me, this show was better than The Wonder Years. Sam is a far more mature and likable character than Kevin Arnold. He treats his friends with respect and doesn't ditch them, which is what Kevin did; especially in the later seasons. It's a real shame this show didn't get a second season. It totally deserved it! What the hell!?
To me, this is probably the closest we'll ever get to a spiritual sucessor to The Wonder Years. Everybody Hates Chris and The Goldbergs don't even come close and Young Sheldon only wishes it was TWY.
We need a spiritual sucessor to this. My idea would be a show set in 2004-05 with a similar premise except we have Green Day's American Idiot as the theme song, instead of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts' Bad Reputation and it would be interesting to hear preteens talk about the popular game consoles at the time: GameCube and PlayStation 2, instead of Atari 2600, which is what was popular in the early 1980s. Also, I could see some of the kids talking about Napoleon Dynamite since that came out during the school session and was very poplar, as I too was in high school in 2004. This would really connect to me as that was my generation as a teen. Freaks and Geeks took place in 1980-81 and I wasn't even born for another 7-8 years and The Wonder Years took place exactly 20 years before I was born and first aired the same year I was born.
