Mr. Rosso

I was wondering if anyone else liked the Mr. Rosso character. I crack up every time I see him. He's a goofy wannabe "cool" guidance counselor who is obviously trying way too hard. I just watched the Alice Cooper "Eighteen" scene and was laughing my ass off. So awkward! Did anyone have a teacher or guidance counselor like that who tried to act cool but was really just a weirdo?

I went to high school in the 80's and we had a teacher who was kind of similar to Mr. Rosso. We'll call him Mr. Smith. We all referred to Mr. Smith as a "hippie". He had long hair and a mustache, and was probably in his mid to late thirties. He would wear Hawaiian shirts and jeans all the time. I think he taught social studies, or something like that. I never had his class, but the rumor among the students was that he came to class stoned. He had a stereo in his classroom, with a turntable, and he used to throw on reggae records in between classes. Which I guess was kind of hip for being a suburban high school teacher, especially back in those days.

One of the traditions at my school was that some of the kids would take a graduation trip to Hawaii. One year Mr. Smith decided to organize a trip to Jamaica (true story). Anyway, when everybody got back from the trip, word got out that he was smoking weed with the students, and he ended up getting fired. Which is kind of a drag, because I don't really see it as that big of a deal.....but....he probably should have known he was putting his career on the line.

I don't know what happened to Mr. Smith after that. I hope everything worked out okay for him though...

My high school guidance counselor wasn't a former hippy. She was the opposite, a former nun. And like most guidance counselors, she knew very little.

I liked the episode when Lindsay and her friends when to see a local band and they were surprised that Mr. Rosso was the lead singer. It reminded me of some of the misadventures of my old gang.
