Am I like the only one who realizes what a douchebag Daniel is?

I really can't be the only one. The kid was a super douche. Tests and Breasts and I'm With the Band (just watched them both) show how bad of a friend and person he is.

I always thought he was kind of selfish. But in the end, he always got along with his friends, so he wasn't really that bad. I think you'd just have to get used to his personality.

reply

You're not the only one. He was a dick.

He is kind of a douche. Daniel has some great moments, but I think he consciously acts like an ass. Aside from his obvious aesthetic appeal, I never understood Lindsey's attraction to him. I just wish we could have seen his character transition a bit more in further seasons.

He came from a broken home so what do you expect him to act like.

The broken home situation doesn't completely explain it. I actually like Daniel a lot, and to deny his flaws is an injustice to what an amazingly three-dimensional character he is. The fact that he comes from a broken home explains why he has such a self-defeatist attitude about school and life. He believes he can't make anything of himself, so he feels he shouldn't bother; this makes me feel sorry for him. However, he chooses to use the 'I'll never amount to anything' card in order to manipulate Lindsey and his teachers.

In I'm With the Band he is amazingly insightful about the fact that Nick will never make it as a drummer, so Lindsey should just "let him have some fun before his father ships him off," but instead of saying this to Nick he berates him in front everyone. I don't know which would have been worse for Nick to hear anyway.

In Kim Kelly is My Friend we see Daniel cheats on Kim, or at least crosses some boundaries he shouldn't if he has a girlfriend, and then lies right to Kim's face about it. Then, throughout many instances in the series, we see how much he really does care about Kim.

I'm not saying Daniel is without his good parts; he displays them repeatedly throughout the series, but he does act like a jerk at times when it is completely unwarranted. That's all I'm saying. I really loved watching him as a character, but at first glimpse, he's not someone I would immediately take on as a friend. He seems like a person who would always be there for you when you really need him, but day-to-day I could only take him sparingly.

I think calling him a douche is harsh. Show me a 17, 18 year old boy who doesn't have douchey moments. Did you watch the whole series? If not, I won't spoil it.

reply

This. He COULD be a jerk at times, but not really such a bad guy. He had him moments. Dini

It just sucks to be him is all. Held back twice in school so he is an 18 year old junior. How unlikely is it that he will make it through high school? What future is there for a dropout? Daniel would have a pervasive, inescapable sense of his shortcomings and failures, and the likely future ahead for him. All he can do is watch it unfold. There's little motivation for him to try to change things or be a better person.

But, it all comes down to attitude and confidence. The Fonz was probably a high school dropout with limited skills, but it didn't stop him from having numerous girlfriends, work that he loved, and being happy in his life.

Daniel had the "bad boy" personality. And he was a good looking guy. Many HS girls are attracted to the "bad boy". Even guys like to hang out with people like that as they think it will make them look cooler. I think he was depicted very well.

And let's face it, it looked like he would be fun to hang out with.

reply

I did think he could be a real jerk at times. Definitely not someone I'd want a long-term relationship with. A fling maybe. He reminds me of a guy (ok, a couple guys) I knew in high school. Fun to hang with. But don't try to depend on them for anything.

As for the "broken home" thing, that is just a typical, lame, over-used excuse. I knew people whose parents were divorced and they did not act like that. I knew a guy who was kicked out by his mother at 16 because her new husband did not like him. He worked and eventually made something of himself. I also knew people from "happy" or "normal" families who turned out to be scumbags. So it comes down to the person, and how they really are.

reply

Yeah, I knew a guy who not only acted exactly like Daniel, but practically worshiped the character. Only difference was, he didn't live in a trailer, and whenever he got himself in a situation, he could always count on his mommy to bail him out. The man-child still to this day thinks he's untouchable...and he probably will be until his hairline starts to recede and his looks fade after years of alcohol abuse.

Lindsay got over the little crush she had on Daniel when she realized he was a douche bag.

Isn't "douche bag" two words?

reply

He had his douchy moments, but he usually makes up for it after just most friends do.

Daniel can be a douche but he always made up for it.He's the one that invited Lindsay to hang out with the freak crowd. He also was supportive of Nick's relationship with Lindsay and Kens's with Amy.I love how he's hanging out with the geek crowd in the last episode. So he really proved that he's not a bad friend.I just got the impression that he was frustrated with his own life and took it out on others.
