In the military world in the late 18th century, which would have been the consequences for the loyalist officer if he had refused to accept Tavington's order?

Pretty sure it was the death penalty just like other acts of mutiny and what not.

What exactly happened to that guy anyway? The Adam Baldwin character. He kind of disappears after the church gets burned down.

I think you can still see him for a couple of seconds in the last battle,when Tavington sounds charge of the dragoons (without the approval of Cornwallis).
