Of course Hawk never made it to the moon

I just watched this again, and I realized that the movie isn't saying that Hawk made it to the moon and sat down to watch the earth and die.

It was Clint Eastwood's character's imagination of what Hawk would have done. We have no idea what happened after he left with Icon.

Film should have ended with him slamming into the moon at 1000s of MPH with a massive smile on his face and/or a joyous display of excitement. Would have made it all worth while.

With today’s CGI, it probably would have ended that way.

Interesting. I took it as a 'real' ending - totally unrealistic but intended to leave the audience content. More logically he suffocated on the way and the remains of the satellite just smashed into the moon's surface.
