this was just a terrible movie
just too unbelieveable....
for a story like this they should have tried to make it a comedy instead of taking it serious...honestly i couldn't take it serious...i turned it off after an hour.

Yeah, just because you didn't like this movie, you had to start a new thread?
shareDoncha hate that? People so self-righteous that they have tell EVERYONE how bad a movie was? Talk about Buzzkill! That gets my back right up, and makes me wanna slap them till they realize how selfish and spoiled it makes them sound.
shareAnyone who disagrees with me about a movie being good or not is selfish and spoiled! They deserve to be slapped!
Jeezuz, talk about spoiled.
Well, I took as a comedy, not seriously, and it worked allright.
Was anybody else bothered by the violence in this movie? I mean, I don't have nothing against violence in movies in general. I do watch and enjoy the kind of movies that some people may even call sick. The problem is how violence was portrayed in this movie. It was portrayed as a somesort of cleansing thing between friends and has no consequences. It's like, "it's okay to beat up people if they are your friends and you have a good reason". This is the sort of violence in movies that I consider extremely harmful. Just my 2 cents.
shareIt's called comedy. Don't take it too seriously.
sharewhat the *beep* are you talking about?
shareThe only semblance of intentional (man-made) violence was the fight at the bar.
The space accident is the result of (always-imperfect) humans trying to carrying out very difficult actions under adverse conditions amidst very dangerous technology.
this movie is only for old folk.
shareNot true.
But then you're not old enough to know that...
to me that was really the most irritating part of this movie. it's so obviously written by and for babyboomers. and then especially those of them who think a young boy/girl-friend will make them look young, instead of pathetic.
this may be a sf- movie, but it could just as well have been a western or a comedy, for the only point they seemed to want to make was: look at what we oldies can still do.
just to be clear: i have absolutly nothing against old people, i just don't like double standard. and i've met far to much babyboomer who want both respect from the young for their grey hairs(even though when they were still young they hardly had any respect for the elderly at all), but also lose al dignity trying to look young. if you want respect purely based on your ripe age , you shouldn't at the same time deny that age at every opportunity.
without this the movie would still be way to predictable to my taste. when you hear that one of the team members has cancer, you already know he's going to die in space in some heroic effort to save the other astronauts. and when they make so much fuss about landing on manual control, it's obvious that's the way the shuttle is going to land. and of course the russian sattellite will turn out to be much more dangerous then expected.
I'm surprised you bothered to watch it, then, really.
And your comments about double standards apply to some young people too, in a different way. Want to look older to gain respect but don't want to die of old age at 25. My father-in-law is 79 and still tries to charm women: not for any purpose other than to be charming (he's way past anything else).
The movie was never intended to be anything other than entertaining. Brain candy. Accept it for that and there's no problem.
why i watched it? to see if it would be better or worse then expected (though i have to admit i wasn't expecting much). i try not to judge any movie i haven't watched myself. i also rarely walk out on a movie midway, perhaps the second half will be better.
i never claimed young people can't have double standards as well(by the way:i really hate the whole youth-worship thing nowadays(1)). nor do i have any problem with old men being charming to women of whatever age (my only problem is when such a man seriously thinks he's still wildly atractive to girls half his age).
well. i think that without the old-cowboy thing this movie would suck and with it the movie sucks even more. and i usually like old cowboys ('unforgiven', 'the shootist')having one last fight.
(1)=that's my whole problem here. old people being so obsessed with being/feeling young that they lose their dignity and self-respect. nothing wrong with being 'young at heart',but it should not be taken to extreme.
What in heaven's name is your problem? This movie was intended to be basically comedy with some serious moments for substance! Maybe you should stay home and have some more pablum.
share"to me that was really the most irritating part of this movie. it's so obviously written by and for babyboomers. and then especially those of them who think a young boy/girl-friend will make them look young, instead of pathetic."
Right. Because it's impossible that a woman in her 30s/40s would want anything to do with a man in his 60s or 70s... who just happens to still be fit enough to qualify as an astronaut.
Do you really think there aren't women in their 30s who'd shag Donald Sutherland or Tommy Lee Jones if they got the chance? It's not like they're falling apart, senile and smell of wee... they've still got a good few years left on them.
"without this the movie would still be way to predictable to my taste."
I think that's a fair comment, but again the plot isn't meant to be taken very seriously.
it was a comedy, idiot
[wake up screaming from the american dream]
I don't see what's so necessarily unbelievable about the story but I will agree that the film might have been more entertaining if it had been a little more tongue-in-cheek and been trimmed about 30 minutes.
shareI don't understand something in this movie. They are in space and they connect to the satellite with the mechanical arm from the space shuttle. Why are they saying that the satellite "must weigh at least 50 tons" and they don't know if the arm could handle the weight? Aren't they in space where there is no such thing as weight?
shareBut mass is the same, no matter where you are. I don't understand the physics but I believe it has to do with momentum in that a moving object that would weigh 50 tons on Earth making contact with a smaller object will have the same kind of effect due to its mass.
shareI am 27 years old and I think this is one of the best films I have seen in a long time. There was good chemistry between all the actors and some good chuckles along the way. I find it funny that people don't like the film because it is "too unbelievable" but they could watch something like Harry Potter or X-men and that's no problem. Plus, in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, they beat the living snot out of each other before a violent sex act, yet people have a problem with old rivals getting into a fist fight!?! It blows my mind.
shareWow, I read through this entire thread and I totally agree with this guys comment. People need to understand it's a fictional movie made for ENTERTAINMENT purposes.

Well said. It's ENTERTAINMENT. Not for everyone, but then what is? A good way to burn a couple of hours enjoyably. People make too much of this media...it's just people playing dress up for insane amounts of money for cryin out loud!
"Nothing is ever what it seems, but everything is exactly what it is" B-Banzai
"But mass is the same, no matter where you are."
Yes. F=ma wherever you are.
There's a limit to the mass that the shuttle arm can move safely without straining the joints, and there's also newton's laws to worry about: for every action there's an equal and opposite reaction. If the thing on the end of the arm is a similar mass to the shuttle, then moving the arm will move the shuttle as much as the 'thing'. Often that won't matter, but if you don't want to start rotating or can't fire the thrusters to prevent it, that could be a problem.
"People need to understand it's a fictional movie made for ENTERTAINMENT purposes."
Yeah, and it utterly failed to entertain.

go screw yourself. I thought it was a good movie.
shareno accounting for one's taste
shareI am shocked so many people are defending this movie, it was a good idea and it cameout way too serious for how impossible this film was and it would of worked as a comedy. It was not a comedy, but some serious film that was totally impossible and it had nothing really special about it but maybe some cool special effects.
shareIt was a comedy with some drama. People are taking this way too seriously.
shareTrue, sawyertom.
Let's face it, the title gives it away, and the way these old astronauts get through their medicals should have made it clear to those who took it seriously...

im 17 and LOVEEEEEE this movie, i love space and aeroplanes and everything like that
I love the actors, i think the film was fantastic and when the boy is in the aeroplane i loved that bit, i wana do that.
And when theyre in space it makes you think what it must be like all alone out there with the earth staring at you and making a choice about losing one of your crew and your friends.
space cowboys FTW/

i was disappointed in this movie the first time through, because with these four male stars, i was hoping for major ensemble interplay, and it just didn't happen.
but when i got off my high horse (i.e. watched the movie again with a sixpac and no expectations) it's a fine, fine little movie, and i'm glad that it's in my collection.
