original was better
who elsee agrees? this is just my opinion, but i don't really think it follows up with the original story well and had too much gore.

shareI have never seen the original nor do I care to. I love this film the atmosphere, the actors just a creepy film that I love to watch over and over. There are very few films that I can re watch for years and this is high on the list. Now I wish the ending of the film was better that is my only gripe but overall it doesn't ruin the film.
The straight to DVD sequel sucks balls tho.

I agree; the original was much more creepier and enigmatic. The remake is cliched fun, imo.
"Speak of the Devil, and He shall appear."
I'm not sure how to compare this with the original. In terms of which does a better job of being a terrifying film? The 1999 version is far superior in every facet. In no way can that be argued.
Never did I consider the original a great film to begin with. It always came across as almost a daffy play on horror films of that time. I never thought it was put together very well either.
Frankly, I thought the second film was very underrated. Rush was outstanding and I mean outstanding. Loved the effects on the creatures in the house. Good touch of humor, but not too much.
Ending killed it for me though.
I see how some liked the first better, but it's a matter of what you like more.

Prefer the original, but really loved the remake as well (one of the most underrated remakes there is).
"Martyr me for Cordis Die."
There was nothing "classy" about the original. The skeleton marionette was so faked that Price quickly disposed of it so we wouldn't study it too much. Impossible "noose outside the window trick," too.
Production design, surreal ideas, plot elements that were disturbing in a very creepy basement. Unless you prefer a blind woman wheeled out on a dolly, instead.
The original is so bad that even when it's shown on cable, I usually skip it. And talk about a rushed ending. At least the remake TRIED to create an ending.
I'm not saying the remake is a great film. Like many horror films, the equivalent of fast food. But it blows the original out of the water.

Kubrick's film - will always be the definitive version of The Shining.
I prefer the original, but I thought this remake was pretty awesome as well.
The Saw Is Family
I like both versions.
Vincent Price was awesome in the original. But this film has Geoffrey Rush doing a splendid Price impression plus Famke Janssen. This remake was a much bigger production compared to the more contained original.
Jansen and Ali Larter, even if the latter regrettably didn't give us a whipped cream bikini
