I don't respect him at all. I actually respected him because he was so cool in Staying Alive but now I have no respect for him. His acting was bad and his choice of religion is bad. How about you? Do you respect Travolta? Discuss, please.
Let's see: he was mildly likable in Grease, and I enjoyed him in Get Shorty and Pulp Fiction. He wasn't bad in Swordfish, either. Then there's Face Off, Pelham, Battlefield Earth, and I'm sure a couple other movies in which I think he absolutely sucks in (although, he's so bad that it's funny in BE).
As an actor, I think he's rather terrible and pretty one-dimensional, given his track record, so I wouldn't say that his few high points make me respect him. Add in the fact that he's a Scientologist and there's no longer any possible way that I could.
I thought he was pretty badass in 'Get Shorty'. The way he played it cool the whole time was great. Still, I think he's pretty one-dimensional.
It's not even so much that I disrespect him for being a Scientologist (although I do) or for taking this movie role. He's just so TERRIBLE in this movie. Almost like he was acting bad on purpose. This movie was supposed to be serious, right?
What I'd really like to know is why Forest Whitaker and Barry Pepper signed on. Maybe they wanted to do John a favor?
I agree w/ some Pulp Fiction free hall pass. One of the GOAT movies. Their s a minute fraction of actors that havent done absolute crap movies. i.e. Samuel Jackson snakes on a plane. Another lifetime pass for PF but thats another thread. This post no way promotes this dog pile of a movie or in anyway supports its existence I want to make that as clear as day. However Trivolta is a fine actor and this is not his best work.
I respect John Travolta for being graceful enough to play the villain and not the lead character as he had planned to when the project was first being discussed years earlier.
Now, as for him dropping the ball with some less than sterling film projects after his comeback film "Pulp Fiction", that warrants a book length analysis about the inner workings of the John Travolta business machine. His advisers have not been protecting him. But, despite that, he has maintained his "A" list stardom after his many falls from grace.
John Travolta is an amazing talent and I suspect we will see more comeback projects on the level of "Pulp Fiction".

Seriously, your "respect" is dependent on the roles on actor plays? I don't know Travolta personally, so I have no opinion on respecting him (although what I know of his dealings with women, he seems like a great guy: a widower who found love again; I never hear about him running around or anything). He seems like a nice fellow -- someone you could shoot the breeze with. Other than that, I've got no info on whether or not to respect him.
If you simply mean "respecting his acting choices", well, he's certainly had his ups and downs, but for the most part, I'm happy to see him on the screen.

I dont know him, and I dont follow his films but at least he stood up for something he believed in. I'm not talking about religion but he wanted to adapt the novel and sticked to doing this movie although all the controversy and limitations it had.
