I just saw the movie today. After having seen Bad Education and Talk To Her I had high expectations. Well I must say I was disapointed. Almodovar is really a great director, who can portray a human depth in his movies that I miss in most hollywood productions. But this movie really mist something. The story telling and acting (from Cecilia Roth)could have been much better. It is obvious that Almodovar has grown in his movie making sinds then. For me his best movie is Talk to Her.
I found it to be his most personal film. Obviously the character of Esteban was a mirror image of Almodovar himself. I thought that the film was his best work, and certainly his most profound. Although, Almodovar tends to create a variety of films: comedies (Women on the Verge...), dramas (Hable Con Ella), satires (Atame!), even critiques (Mala Educacion). This film may have been a culmination of all of his feelings towards women in general: that they can be *beep* but they are also what holds everything together. I also think that the theme of Transvestisism (is that right?) is basically saying that, although men try to become women, they aren't really WOMEN. (I hope that makes sense!) In short, I think it is his best film. But who can really say that there is a "best" Almodovar film?
I've recently gotten into Almodovar. He's amazing, and i love his work thus far. I think La Mala Educacion is his best. It's thrilling, its twisty, it has memorable characters and it hits an odd spot in the soul. Very strange, but very good movie. One of my new favs and definitely my new favorite of Almodovar. I also saw Volver last week, and really liked it. The story of all the women, life and death and everything in between was refreshing. Talk to Her is a movie i have to see again. Parts of it was slow, but it was a very unique movie, very odd. I liked it, and loved how it was made, but it didn't click with me. It needs a 2nd viewing. All About My Mother i loved. I thought it was just wonderful. I'm a big fan of A Streetcar Named Desire, so this movie was just a blessing. This opened me up to see Volver, since Penelope Cruz was so good in it. The ending was a tad bland, but it was a nice story with nice characters. I plan on looking into Laws of Desire soon.
in order of my favorites
Bad Education Volver All About My Mother Talk to Her
I had seen Volver y Hable con Ella, but they didn't compare to this one.
It was my favorite for these reasons: Cecilia Roth's emotional wheel of life was acted out wonderfully by her. -the directing was fresh and fun to watch Penelope Cruz surprised the crap out of me, the scene with her at the Barcelona Palm Square, is heart-breaking. Antonia San Juan is a real TS and did a great job. The self-reflexive Streetcar Named Desire and All About Eve were wonderful additions.
IMO Pedro Almodóvar have shot 3 masterpieces, several good movies and a couple of stinkers. His masterpieces are: Hable con ella (Talk to Her), La mala educación (The Bad Education) and Todo sobre mi madre (All About my Mother).
BTW I have seen all the movies directed by Almodóvar, except for "Fólleme Tim" (I have yet to meet someone who have seen that obscure title).
Is hard to choose among masterpieces, but I think Hable con ella is her best film so far. La mala educación come close behind, followed by Todo sobre mi madre.
Let's put it this way:
Hable con ella 10/10 La mala educación 9.5/10 Todo sobre mi madre 9/10
I love Almodóvar, really he is one of my favorites directors, but was so desapointed with this movie, I couldn't relate at all with the story, penelope was great as usual but something was not right this time. For me the true Almodóvar masterpiece is Live Flash, I also love Talk to her, Broken Embraces and Bad education.
