This IS NOT a good movie

I consider myself to be a moviefreak, I see all kinds of movies: Spirited Away, Oldboy, Amelie From Montemarte, Mysterious Skin, Godfather, The Downfall and also a lot of "slow movies" (just like this: Le Vita e bella, Citizen Kane, Gosford Park and The Hours.. I watch everything and I know when I see a good movie.

Before watching "Todo Sobre Mi madre" I had pretty high expectations, they were not fulfilled.

This was a crappy movie, end of story. Sure the acting was good and the music/score were faboulus. But it was just so BORING! And all the plot holes.....

If you haven´t seen this movie, don´t waste your time.

Of course you're entitled to your opinion but I just wanted to point out that movies like: "Spirited Away", "Amélie", or "The Downfall" DO NOT make you a moviefreak. Although they are among my favorites, all with the exception of Oldboy maybe, are very much mainstream ... "Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain" was actually criticized for being on the commercial side in France :-)

Almodovar has a singular talent to move me. I was on edge throughout this movie, willing to leak some salty tears at any second. This film is so well paced and deliberate and there are just so many poignant moments. The magnificent acting and I guess you could just call it director's delivery, the cinematography and cleverly and beautifully written script, everything, it just get me every time. Almodovar is one of my favorite directors.

He is a director that puts out "different" or "wierd" films, even though I loathe those terms, that is how a lot of people negatively describe his work. I know from experience, my teacher having shown this film to my college spanish class, that a lot of kids and people in general will be turned off by how "wierd" it is. That is a load of horsehockey. People are unwilling or simply too immature to take his movies seriously. Granted, they are somewhat different, but like somebody has already said, they deal with universal themes in interesting ways. Transvestites, homosexuals, rape, people that are in touch with themselves or who are trying desperately to get intouch with themselves. It's beautiful. You can be a person and take these films seriously and identify with the characters and their struggles and love their stories. I almost said a "normal" person, but then again that term should be redefined. What the hell is normal? Screw normality. If something exists, it is normal. If somebody goes through something, if something moves you, it is normal. We should all be able relate to everything. Now I must concede that everybody is not going to like everything. We all have preferences and like some things, films, styles, genres, whatevers, more than others. I'm fine with people not liking this movie, I respect personal preference. But to call this film bad...and not even attempt to give a reason. Well that is just ridiculous.

Just love this movie for what it is. O.K. call it wierd if you want, but give it a shot. Watch it, pay attention to it, try to approach it with a mind free of expectations. Do not to bellitle cheaply it if it makes you uncomfortable or if it is "different". Different is good. Different is normal. Just relax and let your emotions carry you away.

I'm sorry but i agree with you and i didn't think Talk to Her was good enough to have a 8.0 rating either!! I'd like to know why? I was actually bored watching this movie and i hardly spoke a word to the French girl i was with(who speaks fluent spanish) whilst watching it. I was concentrating hard and actually rewinding to catch any dialogue i missed.

My favourite films are City of God, Requiem, Before Sunset/rise, Godfather 2, D!G. Not that that qualifies my comment to matter.

In response to Braddigan’s comment, I first saw All About My Mother before I had seen any other of Almodavar’s films. I had no idea what to expect, or really what the film was about.
And I loved it. Anyone who is saying that they can't relate to the characters aren’t looking deep enough. Its not just about transsexuals, its about people. The only way that you could not relate to the characters is if you have n heart.
I really enjoyed the film, and a lot of different aspects of it ^_^

I think this is Almodovar's best film EVER. The problem with Almodovar is that you'll either worship him or hate him, no middle way.

"...we need to concentrate on more that meets the eye....you're the truth, not I..."

This was a crappy movie, end of story.
This is a very moving and altogether beautiful movie, showing the lives of people the viewer most likely does not come across in his/her life. I was very touched by it.

The acting and direction was outstandingly good.

¡Viva Pedro!

10/10

Hello, moviefreak-
You need to see more old films- films that depend on dialogue and an assumed intelligence on the part of the audience. Have you seen "Adam's Rib," "Angels With Dirty Faces," "Letter to Three Wives"...?
If Amelie is the standard by which you judge film- you obviously need to have your cinema spoon fed to you- sometimes it's better if someone else does the thinking for you, no? For those of us who prefer to do our own active thinking- "Todo Sobre Mi Madre," is the quentiessential film for self described "movie freaks." "Gosford Park" was hardly a "slow" film- just a quirky, wonderful drama which required that one simply pay more attention than is usually required of your average movie freak.
If you haven't seen this movie- it's only a waste of time if you need to have your films neatly packaged for you- if you need your emotions in a tidy bundle carefully tended- by all means, don't see this film. If you appreciate cinema verite'- and I do not expect the moviefreak to be familiar with this term- if you can acknowledge the staggering beauty of real people, real, messy, untidy, people- please...do yourself a favor, and see this film- see it with your mother. Beware the consequences of feeling your very own feelings, and thinking your very own thoughts, however- you may find your judgements to be somewhat lacking in substance if you have the courgae to be honest with yourself and others.
Almodovar's charm is in his relentless, undying, commitment to authenticity- if you don't get it, don't watch his films- it will only be an excercise in frustration for you.
Best of luck and whatever else you need ...
yet another hyperopinionated "moviefreak."

I have a difficult time with Almodovar films. I enjoy the fact that they are so recognisably Almodovar. Every film has the same style and there is something satisfying in finding that in every film. I also find the characters in his films fascinating and their lust for life, indeed the lust for life of the very films themselves is intoxicating. But but but but, there is something insidious and disturbing in his films that repels me as well. I found this most evident in Bad Education, which I know is about child abuse and thus would be disturbing, but it is there in all of his films. A shiver and a certain repugnance, I cannot express it any better than that. I admire and respect him, yet I couldn't get close enough to any of his work to develop a love for it.

Hold on, there is an exception. For me, Volver is his best film. It is loveable, where his other films are not.
