This movie feels like home.

I've watched it several times, and it makes me feel welcome. Like I know the characters.
I think it's the adventures they go on, the love and understanding they go through, the success, considering the failure, the laughs considering the hurt.

I also think the performances are brilliant, and I don't understand how such a film has had such an impact, seeing as it's not a movie I expected to see.

I was a buyer of software (movies) and saw the case, so many times keen to view ,read it, liked the synopsis yet never watched it until a year ago, immediately fell in love and highly recommend it.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Has a movie ever made you feel warm and familiar? It's so bizarre, I'm interested to know what affect it had on the cast and crew.

There is a reason this movie feels like home. I realized it the first time I saw it, and by the time I got home that night, I felt lonely. I called a Producer friend of mine, and we went and saw it the next night. He felt the same way.

Here's what it is: the Director of Photography filmed it at eye level, and included the camera as a place holder, the camera was, in itself, a person in the group. Eight years later and I still think this film is pure genius. I also realized that this emotional impact was done on purpose.

Thanks to all of you who made this film!

Like putting on an old comfortable pair of shoes. One of my favorite movies.

Agreed. It's like being snuggled up in a warm woobie (blanket) on a cold winter day. I grew up in the midwest and I love the rain with the snow on the ground scenes!!! Great movie!

Cozy is a great description of this classic film. I don't know how many times I've seen it (it's a LOT), but I could watch this a zillion more times. Perfect for rainy, gloomy days or when you're feeling depressed or looking for inspiration. I've read the book which is exceptional as well and has further depth into his breakup with Emily and also her family. If you love this movie, check out the book. I got it at the local library and devoured it.

My only reservation about feeling at home with this kind of movie and actually living in it, is that somehow Hannah would meet Tom Cruise and he'd hang around annoying everybody.

This is the most positive movie site I have ever visited on IMDB. Is there a correlation between intelligent comments with intelligent films? Hmm...

reply

Haha, apparently so. :) I remember someone reading this book when I was back in school (now I'm in college), and the title caught my eye, it just seemed ironic, like the wonder boys were messed up in real life, but at the same time, it was comforting. I guess because nobody's perfect yet they could still be thought as wonderful? idk...

I saw the movie, fell in love with it, and then read the book. Both are terrific and gave me a sense of nostalgia for similar experiences in college. It's a shame this movie didn't win best picture. I'm hoping Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay gets adapted soon, and that it turns out as nice as this movie.

I just watched this 'wonder' movie again and remembered this thread.
So good to see so many agree that WB's is so enjoyable. I'm still yet to read the book.
And again, lovely to read that others find it homely.

This is likely THE loveliest thread I've come across in IMDb. So refreshing to experience such unrestrained, unabashed, non-sarcastic, heart-felt sincerity about a film that gives us the same! The film AND this thread feel like home. Wonderful!!

I absolutely LOVE this film, and watch it a couple of times a year. It is a really feel-good film without being over sentimental or sappy. It's a real up-lifter. Everybody does a fantastic, realistic job of acting. LOVE IT!

This is so funny, I just came on this board to describe this movie as "cozy," thinking that sounded kind of crazy, but I'm really excited to see that so many other people feel the same way! I don't know what it is- the rain, the snow, the general laid-back-ness of it all. What's funny is that for a "cozy" movie, it's actually pretty dark in many ways- drug use, depression, adultery, dead dog, etc. But it is also uplifting and I just love it. I was never a huge fan of Michael Douglas, but he is absolutely perfect in this movie.

I really want to wear his robe and smoke a joint on his porch in the rain.

I visit this movie a few times a year. Lots of things impress me about it but mostly that when you consider how jam-packed with weird drama this one weekend is, the characters are perfectly low-key. I'm drawn to non-hysterical people.

I'm there. Grab a rocking chair and join me.
