Okay I am a HUGE Osmosis Jones fan and for the 4 years I have loved it I have always wondered "What disease is Thrax?" I have researched on the web and there's no disease called the Red Death. I did for a moment think he was Anthrax but he didn't match it's description. Anthrax does raise your tempature but you get it from Infected Animal Skins and you get a horrible skin mark. So does anyone have any information? Thrax is my favourite character and I would be very grateful if someone could answer my question
of course he's not in the medical books or anything, remember he said he was trying to get into the books by infecting and killing off the people within a certain amount of time??? although the writers could have based him off of anthrax since you can get it from animals and such blah blah blah, and since frank worked in a zoo, they figured to put that in there.. He might not have been anthrax, but they probably based him off it.
What was really implied was that Thrax wants a full chapter to himself, like Ebola or the Bubonic Plague. He may have fleeting mentions, but, like the common cold, he isn't significant enough. The fact is that Thrax could have been anything from E. Coli to Campylobacter to Rift Valley Fever.
If you're really serious about "diagnosing" what Thrax is, narrow it down like so:
Affects: Hypothalamus (controls many functions), removes or cancels out DNA segments in the brain.
Of course, there's not really any virus which matches every Thrax symptom. Anthrax is a fast killer, but has its "own chapter in the medical books"
As for the person who said about Ebola = bleeding from every orifice... Not technically true. According to a report by a doctor at an outbreak, the patients' bodies were in shock, but very few bled externally. Those who did, however, died.
And I apologise for the long post. I study Immunology and I like debating things like this.
Nice...finally someone who is not assuming he actually is another disease. Liking the analysis too; Ebola+Anthrax SO do not fit. And to who suggested TB: um what? The main thing that differentiates TB from other diseases is the hacking up blood bit. Otherwise, fever, aches & pains are just basically your stereotypical symptoms of illness. When I was younger, I had always assumed he was just the Red Plague or whatnot but that doesn't work either. There are tons of obscure viruses out there, I'm sure he was just supposed to be a new one.
I remember this movie from when it first came out. I loved it so much at the time, and I remember watching it like 5 times the day I got it on DVD. Years later, I still love it. It just didn't get the praise it deserved...it really was pretty clever and well done.
The Red Death was a disease that is the main focus of an Edgar Allen Poe Poem Masque of The Red Death. It could be a reference to that. The Red Death in the story was a very fatal disease, and highly contagious it killed off most of a smallish town

I got the feeling he was kind of a rare disease that know one had really heard of yet. Thrax keeps mentioning that he wants "a chapter in the health books" or something along those lines. I figured Frank was part of his plot to become "famous" and "notorious" because no one had heard of his type of virus yet.
i read all of the responses and everyone says hes anthrax or some other disease, my opinion is that he isnt a known disease, his whole point of taking down frank , and all of his other victims, is to get "his OWN chapter in the medical books", and the lil germ that calls him la muerta roja, i didnt read much into that mainly because the lil germ was spanish or something and thrax is red,and watchd thrax bring death to the two cells in the mouth, thus he just calls him la muerta roja. right?
If you guys actually read the directors notes about Thrax he is not any known virus or anthrax althought they GOT his name from anthrax he was something completely different and unknown. The directors never decided on what he was only that he was one bad$%^ virus...
He's some new strain of disease scientists hadn't discovered or diagnosed yet. If they knew what it was, the doctors would have said it while trying to treat Frank. He was trying to get his place in the medical books.
I think they were saying he was something new and unheard of. He had only killed a couple people so far. So at the time this movie was made, he wouldn't have been classified yet.
