Apropriate for fourth grade?

I am a fourth grade student teacher whose students are reading Number of the Stars right now and learning about the holocaust. I am worried that fourth grade may be too young for this movie. What does everyone think?

maybe maybe not it's all up to their parents. i watched this movie in my eighth grade english class. it's definetly a toned down holocaust movie i think is suitable for young kids!

I know this is an old thread, but I just watched it again, and I watched it in 9th grade back in 2001, and NO it is not at all appropriate for a 4th grader to watch. there are way to many graphic scenes. I am twenty seven and I still have trouble watching a couple parts of it, and a lot of people had to turn their heads or even leave the class in a room full of fifteen year olds.

Funny you say, cause I saw this for the first time in my 5th grade class, we were learning about the holocaust and WWII at the time. I think its awesome to show this to kids. I also saw Schindler's List for the first time in 5th grade also. Yeah its rated R, but when it comes to the subject any age should learn about it. Especially when it comes down to the subject at hand, the rating does not matter but the meaning and the message.

An if people say its TOO intense.... well ITS the holocaust, it was a disgusting and horrible time.

Showing off is the fools idea of glory

I'm a woman in my 40s and I watch a lot of World War II movies and documentaries. Even though this was science fiction and I knew the whole time it was science fiction, there were some pretty horrifying, graphic moments.

I'd recommend The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, but I've only seen that once and it was edited, so I don't know if it was graphic. I read the novel first and totally did not anticipate the ending.

Reviving an old post but thought I'd add my two cents. I do not believe this is appropriate for young children. I show this to seventh grade students after reading the book and still obtain parent permission. Students cry and are upset on a level that elementary students should not be exposed to. Just because it is based in history doesn't make it open to all ages. Watching people hang to death is not for the eyes of a child under 10.
