An empty, corny horrible movie made up of cheap thrills

That's all it is. It's just a bunch of cheap thrills to elicit a reaction from the audience with no real emotion or logic to back it up. And Commodus could have killed Maximus in his cell right after the first fight.

reply

I just watched it for the first time. So many kept saying how great it is. Meh.

Ebert summed it up in his review. I'm going with my instincts next time and stay away from films like this.

reply

you have to be intelligent to like it, simple as that. stick with Iron MaN or The hulk lol

reply

Those were even worse

reply

It is indeed terrible.

reply

Gladiator is one of the greatest films of all time.

I feel that Transformers is more your level. And there's nothing wrong with that. Culture isn't for everyone. Some people like fillet steak. Some people like a Big Mac.

reply

I've never seen a Transformers movie in my entire life, and there is nothing cultural or elevated about Gladiator. Literally nothing. It is vapid, empty, cheap entertainment for the masses, nothing more. No artistry, no real content, nothing, just something that appeals to the lowest forms of emotion, just like Titanic.

reply

I agree with what you said about Titanic but Gladiator was superb from beginning to end, and of you can't see that then you're definitely not a connoisseur.

reply

I AM a connoisseur of film, you know shít, otherwise you wouldn't be obsessed over this garbage.

reply

As a film connoisseur, what do you think is the greatest film of all time.

reply

Get off your high horse please. The fact that you think this is the height of cinema is laughable. The story is linear and the characters doesn't have much depth. Even the action could be a lot better, something which this film should EXCELL at. It's not very thought provoking. Don't get me wrong, I still think the movie has its qualities, but you're making it out to be something it's far, far from.

reply

The story is linear

Is there meant to be something wrong with that?

Even the action could be a lot better

The action sequences are superb.

It's not very thought provoking

Sooooo thought provoking... soooo incredibly thought provoking. In fact while I was watching I was begging them to stop being so thought provoking, because my thoughts literally couldn't take any more provocation.

Don't get me wrong, I still think the movie has its qualities

WOW that's big of you Mr Kubrick, I'm sure you could make a masterpiece if only...

I see you gave Scarface and Apocalypse Now only 6/10 each.

You think Don Jon is better than Apocalypse Now and Scarface 

I rest my case.

reply

What a strange comparison...
Gladiator is basically an action movie, a blockbuster... You are talking about Gladiator like it is an independent movie made by an Indonesian director or something.

reply

Ebert also liked The Happening.

Caesar. Is. Home.

reply

Stupid comment from the old IMDb days. Gladiator stands the test of time, that comment did not.

reply

Commodus couldn't do that, Maximus was a Roman hero so he had to kill him in public in what would at least appear to be a fair fight.

It seems to me that you don't fully understand the finer points of story telling, maybe you should stick to more basic fare.

reply

Bullshít, anyone could be killed in the middle of the night.

reply

Not in this case. By that time the people knew Commodus and Maximus were enemies. So if Maximus had an accident they would know he was murdered by Commodus.

reply

bullshít, the people knew nothing.

reply

I know this is 7 years old, but.... You don't think the people could put 2 and 2 together? After seeing them having a face to face in the middle of the coliseum? After seeing Maximus turn his back on Commodus? Which then forced Commodus to aggressively tell the slave to remove his helmet, to which he then obliged. Furthermore, the crowd had to urge Commodus with "Live, live, live!" In this movie universe, you don't think the people of Rome would find it odd that Maximus was murdered after this strange event in the middle of the Coliseum? Hmm...

reply

Agreed.
While sometimes it's better to keep the mouth shut, even if you know 'something'.
Can prolong life.

Just as I enjoyed this movie. ♥
And it doesn't hurt that Russell Crowe is a handsome man, yummy!
Oh, that was probably sexist too. 😳

reply

You're clearly talking straight out of your cornhole.

Something like that..

reply

Stick to chick flicks then.

reply

You played yourself...

All of that crumbles to dust with one of the greatest plotholes and nonsensical plots of all time.

reply

[deleted]

The whole movie is implausible for the reasons I've already stated.

reply

[deleted]

what has been roundly refuted?

reply

Listen, I am a history buff. I enjoy reading history and I know for a fact that if Gladiator had been real life, all the Emperor had to do is order his guards to kill Maximus or whatever his name is, on his cell at night. Then the word would be out the next day that he died of some disease. Seriously the plot is nonsensical. Just because it's fiction doesn't mean it doesn't mean it doesn't have to make sense.

reply

It's a movie, it doesn't have to be 100% historical accurate to be entertaining. Get your head out of your ass.

Caesar. Is. Home.

reply

but at the very least it has to be plausible.

reply

It is plausible.

Caesar. Is. Home.

This is a very simple revenge story that is easy to follow. It's also a Ridley Scott movie, (who I've come to realize doesn't know what the hell he's doing) but he does have redeeming qualities. Perhaps what saved this movie was that there was a lot of improv. There are deeper movies out there, which impress me more, but at the end of the day, simple stories and characters work just as well. The action is unmatched in terms of practical effects.
