Transgender or Gender identity disorder is a mental illness. It is different from being a hermaphrodite. If a person, from a physical point of view, has a normal functional body, and only the mind thinks something is wrong (i.e trans-people claim they are born into the wrong body, etc) then the mind needs to be treated - not the body!

By getting sexual re-assignment surgery it is only indulging the mental illness.

Gender identity disorder appears on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), and should be treated as such. If so, tragedies like in Boys Don't Cry might be avoided.

No. The conservative APA (American Psychiatric Association) revised the DSM. It is no longer considered a disorder. It is labeled "gender dysphoria." The manual explicitly states gender dysphoria is not, in and of itself, a mental illness. Rather, it can influence certain mental illnesses such as clinical depression.

Simple research could have cost you the embarrassment of posting misinformation.

I will take that this might be a troll OP post, but I disagree with it being a mental illness because if it were you could walk into a Social Security office and qualify for disability benefits like many bipolar or schizophrenic people do, but you can't.

I agree. Brandon Teena - or rather Teena Brandon - was a girl with serious mental health issues. She was not a boy.
