This is one of my favorite films, but something that no one ever mentions that is a glaring white elephant in the room was that - - - - -

1. Brandon Teena was a LIAR. He lied about pretty much everything, to cover his own butt and I guess to get girls. I know that sounds black and white, and that Lana was finally the girl he could be 100% honest with, but that's doesn't excuse his previous actions. Yet people on these boards defend his actions because of the whole "But she was in love, she didn't deserve to be raped and murdered." No one deserves rape and murder, but at least admit what led up to those outcomes.

2. Brandon Teena was a THIEF. Countless crimes, stealing cars, in and out of court and prison. Not for being a Transgender. But for being a thief.

3. Brandon Teena WOULD NOT change. He would continue to lie and do crime even if Lana and him made it to Lincoln.

As much as I hated the mother, she made a point when she told her daughter: "The majority of what Teena told us was lies." Pretty much.

Any thoughts on this?

None of that really matters since this is a film about the brutal rape and murder of somebody because of his crisis with his gender and sexuality. The film doesn't portray Brandon as a saint. It's very clear about his flaws. So pretty much everything you're complaining about is irrelevant. In fact it shows you didn't understand the message of the movie at all.

First of all, watch how you come at me! I was not starting this thread to be insulted by some low-class bigot, who needs to realize that people are allowed to voice their opinions.

Secondly, I understand that PLENTY of what I said matters since the film SHOWCASES these scenes vividly and as the audience, we need to understand who Brandon Teena was. Were you a director or producer of the film? I thought not- you have no authority to tell me anything about what the film is about. That's your subjective opinion. The film shows rape and murder. But that's a pretty black and white plot explanation. Brandon Teena was a thief and a liar, and further viewings make it hard for the audience to sympathize with her as much.

I wasn't complaining about anything. And EVERYTHING I mentioned was relevant. I guess you're the type that doesn't care what someone's history is; rape and murder are the only thing that this movie is about. Yeah you "really got the message" alright. Idiot.

I think your response to jimbo-rd's first reply was a complete overreaction. They were just simply stating their opinion based on your OP which is probably why they continued to respond in a disrespectful manner the second time around.

You certainly think highly of yourself. Since when did you die and become God? The OP was asking a legitimate question regarding the main character's past history, which yes- included perjury, theft and compulsive lying. The OP never stated that the rape and murder was right, rather he was asking why these issues were never brought up on the boards. The film itself displays them in full view.

You are responding to him as if he's some invalid who has no right to voice his own opinion and thought process. He actually asked a question and put his thoughts in complete sentences, something many IMDB users fail to do. I would hate to see how you come at folks on the Twilight boards. Grow the hell up and stop trying to start unnecessary drama because you're still a virgin waiting for your mom to make a man out of you.

The poster had a legitimate response to the OP's question. The OP then immediately goes on the offensive, and starts attacking the poster and then concludes his post with "Idiot."

You're hilarious!!! You realize you're online right? None of this matters/holds bearing. The best thing for you would be to ignore people who aggravate you.

And I'm in agreement with the poster that stated the first reply was a fine one. Just an opinion, not an attack. Disconnect if you get frustrated easily.

Maybe his flaws were product of having to live hiding who he really was or wanted to be. Had he been accepted maybe he had a job and didn't need to steal.

John and Tom did not have the right to play judge, jury, and executioner.
You steal, you get your day in court, you are convicted or acquitted. Lying or cheating or stealing are not crimes which are punishable by death. Or by rape. John and Tom should both be in jail for life, no parole.
And if you are using Brandon's dubious behavior to somehow justify the rape and murder, let's remember the two rapists/muderers were not exactly fine, upstanding, "innocent" citizens themselves. I guess that means someone should have been able to rape and kill them without consequence. Outstanding. Maybe someone should look into that.

I never said John and Tom had right to do anything to Brandon. Did you read my original question???? Brandon Teena was a thief and a liar, and no one seems to understand this. Even in the beginning, her friend warns her not to keep doing this- or she will be killed eventually. She didn't listen though. The movie would not have shown these scenes unless they were trying to showcase all sides of the story.

I don't think we are supposed to see Brandon as "innocent" at least I don't... but none of the things Brandon did made her (P.C. crowd you can blow me) deserving of death...

Also, it seems as if the mother's concern was more rooted on bigotry than the actual fact that Brandon Teena was a bad person...

After all, she was hanging out with scumbag degenerates, so I doubt a "liar" would've been her biggest concern.

1. We do not know if the murderers would have murdered him anyway, as soon as they would find out the rape and murder would probably ensue anyway. Although I could be wrong.

Whatever she has done she didn't hurt anyone, and whatever she did she didn't deserve to be RAPED or MURDERED, she was INNOCENT, and these bastards (John & Tom) should be burned.
