Why do you say that as if Dragonlance came before LOTR as opposed to about 40 years later?
shareHey, the Dragonlance books were fun! But they were published a few decades after LOTR, and owed a great deal to Tolkien, to put it politely.
But yeah, just so you know, there's a great deal of innocent affection between male characters in the LOTR books. Or at least, most people think it's innocent, but I'm not most people.
As far as I'm concerned, Frodo and Sam were heading to Brokeback Mountain throughout the trilogy, lol.
shareI know what you're saying because there are numerous "looks of love" between characters (too many IMO), particularly Frodo and Sam, but it simply reflected innocent affection. After all, one of them married and had kids at the end of "Return of the King."
shareSweetie, I'm the one who disagrees with the "innocent affection" theory. I mean, if you read the books with eyes that aren't innocent, it's very clear that Sam dearly loves Frodo, in a way that's somewhere between worshipful and romantic, although Frodo is too much of a mess to return his feelings.
All right, I can accept that a lot of the declarations of love and kisses exchanged between adult males are how innocent affection is expressed in a culture that is different from our own. There are cultures here on Earth in this era where men to express friendship, or polite greetings. However, even in those cultures, when two men choose to refrain from marrying and spend their lives together as long as they both live, as Legolas and Gimli did, we're probably talking more than friendship.
I edited my post accordingly. You're free to interpret the movie any way you want, but I'm certain Tolkien was shooting for innocent brotherly affection rather than anything defiled. It's pretty clear actually.

Of course, the unspiritual, hedonistic or disillusioned would go to the nearest village on liberty and pick up a village girl at the pub or, if they had to, a (female) prostitute. This was the case during later wars too, as depicted in flicks like "Cross of Iron" (WWII) and "Hamburger Hill" (Vietnam).
Likewise, at the end of "Return of the King" one of the hobbits found himself a 'hot babe' hobbit, married and had kids.
So, yes, I agree Tolkien grasped the simple (and obvious) dynamics of romantic/erotic reality.
Some, people, of course choose to reject reality, aka "the way it really is," for one reason or another. Yet not Sam or Frodo; or Legolas and Gimli.
