The Deer Lady

Was it just me or was de deer lady totally out of context with the movie, why was she over-acting it so much. I think that she was a nice character but the way that het role was worked out was just terrible......anyone else have the same feelings???

Totally agree with you. Some really bad acting out of the deer lady scene. Richard Farnsworth gives such a fantastic memorable performance in this film, but other roles seem as if they are caricatures of Midwestern people as perceived by idiotic Hollywood types.

Note how many deer the woman said she had hit. Then note where else in the film that number comes up.

It is part of the allegory that Lynch is building. Once you make the connection you will see that her demeanor and behavior make a lot of sense. Your word "context" is the key...

I hate it when people act like this. Just say the number, this isn't a test.

Just a little bit of trivia on the Deer Lady, I've been re-reading 'Lynch on Lynch' (a book of interviews by Chris Rodley - well worth buying if you're a Lynch fan). Here's a little extract:

Rodley: What about the encounters with people in the movie? Were they based on actual meetings?

Lynch: A lot of them were and some were not. Some were based on true stories that got folded in, like the Deer Lady. Alvin didn't meet her, but she does exist - a woman who, for some unknown reason, hit thirteen deer. [Laughs.]

I think that scene in question works pretty well as we're led to believe the accident is much worse after seeing Alvin's reaction to it, then there's a sense of almost absurd comic relief when we hear this hysterical woman's strange story, followed by even darker humour in Alvin actually eating the deer while being 'watched' by the plastic animals.

The scene is about slavery. She's a slave to her job and the dead deer are the affect of her having a job on the environment.
