Watch Dennis Edwards fuming as he moves in to join the rest of the group. First, he doesn't know any of the dance routine. Just as David turns around to sing to the group "'Cause you mean that much to me", I hope you can read lips because Dennis clearly mouths "m----- f-----." This always cracks me up, especially since the censors didn't catch it!
That's funny - because in real life, Dennis Edwards has never indicated that he was angry when David would pull these antics (and David DID do this in real-life). When Dennis has spoken about this time, he always indicates that he and David were friends - and that he was even a little in awe of David. Dennis has recalled the night when David came over to Dennis' place and told Dennis that the Tempts had picked Dennis to be David's replacement in the group. I think when David would show up to the Temptations' performances and steal the mike - Dennis wouldn't really get angry, but he would just get out of the way, lol. Dennis was still very new to the group when all of this was going on - and was still in awe of his good fortune, and even felt a little like he didn't want to "trespass" on David's contributions to the group.
I think Dennis' getting mad is yet another "dramatic liberty" the movie makers took, just to make things a little "juicier".
Also, Dennis,Eddie and David toured together up until the time David died. A good source of information is "The Original Leads of the Temptations", a documentary from 1992. It features interviews with Dennis, Eddie and David. It's hard to find, but I found it on VHS on the Street Gold Records website.
Exactly and they did have him mouth those words (OP mentioned) to basically make for good storyline. Far as what other poster stated about Dennis not having issues with David can be unsure. Because one thing you never do on interviews is claim your hate for another artist ~ especially one you may end up working with (which he later did).
For me I do believe that perhaps Dennis mentioned his dislike of David and instead of just showcasing that specific moment the movie just throws in this scene where David jumps on stage. Just like the fact that Otis and Josephine were divorced prior to the actual scene given on the screen (he was in fact remarried at one point) but to avoid confusing audiences with another character they just kept Josephine as his main lady throughout the movie.
If this happened more than once you might think it was planned and rehearsed as part of the act. It would have brought more people to see the concerts just wondering what David would do next.
David Ruffin-an unlisted member of the Temptations. Yep! That would work!
Yeah, my mother pointed that out to me when it first aired.
I don't care how good of a friend you are, if I'm singing on stage and you just come up and grab the mike and taking me off guard and making me look like a fool (not knowing the dance moves so I can't just blend in) I'd be pretty upset too. I think I'll do more than mouth M Fer under my voice.
I'm too old to be politically correct, I'm gone be real. Take it or leave it.
LOL...You have GREAT EYESIGHT...LOL....I have watched this movie for the past 16 years & I didn't notice that..lol...I had to keep rewinding it...lol....that was hilarious...lol
Just took my first viewing of the film and missed Dennis Edwards's mouthed taunt at David Ruffin. I shall look out for it next time. But this piece of the film was great dramatic fun. I think 'Ain't Too Proud To Beg' is the most exciting song that the Temptations ever performed. I just felt like a member of that audience. Overjoyed and carried away with the David Ruffin vocal.
I watched this scene, over and over and over again and maybe we're supposed to think that's what he said, but I don't think that's what he said. (Even though he would have been justified in saying that). *shrugs*
On another note, A disgruntled member jumping on stage and stealing the spotlight is why all members of the group need to know the dances. lol.
"Do you even remember what you came here to find?"
