The Shark Attack

Just caught some of this movie again last night. I wonder what type of shark was responsible for the attack that killed one man and horribly mauled another while they were fishing? To me that had Tiger shark written all over it.

Tiger shark x 2

Thanks for your reply. My best guess is that the first man was attacked and the second one may have tried to help him and got into the line of fire as well. The attack reminds me of a real life attack that happened over Labor Day weekend in 2001 in North Carolina when a young Russian couple got horrifically mauled in the surf. The man unfortunately died of his injuries and the woman lost her leg. Many experts thought that the work of a Tiger as well.

How awful. And I’m no expert but when I hear about shark attacks I automatically think Tiger shark unless Great White is specifically mentioned within the source.

Yeah, Tigers are very nasty! My guess is it was probably just one shark involved in the attack in both cases. For all of the shark attacks that I have read about it is almost always one shark who is involved in the vast majority of attacks.

With the Great Whites you usually get the exploratory bite thing. Unfortunately it can be devastating if the shark is a big one. But they don't usually attack savagely as what the Tigers will. They can be relentless. Very aggressive when in hunting mode. Bulls are aggressive as well by nature but they are in a much lower league generally speaking than what the Tigers are. They don't usually come in and try to tear you to shreds like what some Tigers may do.

I knew a guy who liked to scuba dive and he told me about the time he encountered a Tiger. He said he was calm because of the way the Tiger held his pectoral fins (side) straight out. He was simply in cruising mode. He said that if held them in a slanted manner it would be time to get out of there and quick as it would signify the shark was in hunting mode. He said the Tiger did not bother with him at all. I would have fled just the same.

I just googled Koh Phi Phi Ley Thailand sharks. And going by it, very possible it could have been and shark species. I was there in 2002, and know for a fact, there's many black tip reef sharks. That was in the waters off of, Koh Phi Phi Don, which is in close proximity to Koh Phi Pih Ley. But black tip reef sharks don't get that big, and aren't known to be real aggressive towards humans. However, there are bull sharks in Thai waters and occasionally tiger sharks. Both those species are known for their aggression towards humans.
