Anyone Else Think This Movie Sucks?

I found it hokey, derivative, predictable, and just plain bad.

reply

No way! I watched it all again the other night, I think it's solid and effective, definitely too long, but doesn't ruin the movie for me. Sorry if you dislike it :(

I don't think the movie holds up as well as it did at the time because at the time Harrison Ford was a big box office hero who only played good guys so it was a surprise to find out he was completely evil.

Now ford isn't as popular as he was in the 80s and 90s and has played some less heroic roles so for somebody who didn't experience the peak of Fords box office power, the villain reveal isn't as big a deal. so in that sense there is a big Gimmick in this movie that does not hold up well with time.

No. When I first saw it, I rated it 8/10. Now, I rate it 10/10.

Maybe it is something you need to have watched at the time to appreciate properly?

Just to be clear, I did watch it when it was released and loved it.

Still love it, but that may just be nostalgia.

Nope. One of his best and one of her best. Except for the cars, the movie holds up well.

I thought it was pretty ordinary, up to the last 45 minutes - which were GODAWFUL! Watched it on TCM last night and wondered why I'd never seen it before- then realized Zemeckis was the director. I haven't liked anything of his since Used Cars and Romancing the Stones so I probably avoided it when it was released. His films are always overlong, messy, bloated, and way overrated. This was no exception.

This was an asinine statement. You're entitled, but Zemeckis has never done a film that was bad! He invented stuff no one had ever seen before in Death Becomes Her, and Forrest Gump, etc, etc., ad nauseum. The guy is a GOD!

I don't think this movie sucks, but I really hate the last 30 minutes to the point it almost ruins the movie for me. It's one thing if the husband killed the mistress on accident maybe, but when he turned out to be a psycho murderer (and wanted to hook up with the daughter) was just, uh, no....

It's a shame, too. Because otherwise it's a great movie.

reply

Yes, the last 30 minutes were the worst, by far. I fast-forwarded through them I was so annoyed by that point. That is when I discovered that this film had been directed by Robert Zemeckis. I was even more let down to realize that this very deriviative, boring, cliched film was directed by someone whom I consider to be, at times, a great director.
I think it's worse than you do. Nothing makes sense in it. Poor screenwriting, poor directing, and lousy acting.
I apologize for jumping into the thread on your comment--I just don't know how to do this properly, yet.
Thanks.

Love it start to finish. Is it great no. But it's beautiful to look at with stunning actors and a less than happy Hollywood ending. It's a not so guilty pleasure I can watch again and again. And that house

I didn't like it, but I think it was just because I didn't sympatise with characters.

A married couple, with a grown up dauther, a cheated woman, the mystery on the couple next door.

Also, all the scenes meant to scare didn't fright me at all. And I don't like horror movies with sudden scenes meant to scare.

reply

I thought it was uninteresting and a little overacted at times. I cared so little about the plot and was annoyed at all the cheap jump scares I didn't even bother past the halfway point.
