Renee Z.

I consider her a sort of hit-or-miss actress. I couldn't stand her in "Leatherheads," for example, and found her hard to watch in "Chicago" (maybe because of her being juxtaposed with the sizzlingly gorgeous Zeta-Jones) and her mawkish role in "Jerry Maguire". Her squinty eyes can make me feel uncomfortable, and sometimes her croaky voice gets on my nerves. I couldn't get into Bridgit Jones, but liked her in the sequel, which I saw last night, maybe because there was a "halo effect" from having watched "Cold Mountain" earlier in the evening.
But I ADORED her in this role. To me, she was the highlight of the film. Everyone in it was excellent but I loved her scenes the most. To the person who wrote on this site that Ruby was portrayed as being too broadly drawn, maybe that is true in contrast with the character in the novel, but living in South Carolina, and having spent considerable time in N. Carolina, I can tell you this character STILL EXISTS here in the flesh. Women who talk, think, and act like Ruby are far from scarce. I found her completely authentic and totally refreshing.

Renee Z is one of those love/hate actors. I loved her in Jerry Maguire and thought she was a total miscast in this.

While watching it yesterday, every time her character opened her mouth, I cringed and turned down the volume - she was that obnoxiously loud.

I think she was great in cold mountain

I agree - I absolutely adored her in this movie - but overall, don't care much for her other movies.....

I didn't like her role in this movie. She brought laughs to a movie that didn't deserve to be laughed at.

Hi peterpulanski,

She's a talented actress but was directed to play this role much too broadly and for laughs. The character in the novel was nineteen and elfin. I had issues with most of the casting, but realize it was the director's decision.

Just for me- she stole every scene she was in. Val Kilmer in Tombstone did the same thing. Some actors/actresses are just perfect fit for the parts they are cast in.

I don't know why her win is so hated. I really think this is one of her better roles.

People complain that the accent is too twangy. I know rural people with thicker accents than the city. I didn't find that irritating. Plus, she's from Southern Texas.

I agree with someone above, she's a very hit or miss / love or hate actress.

She was wonderful as Ruby; speaking her mind and taking care of business. Her performance broke up the length of the move somewhat for me.

Why ain't you at the garden party you heathen?

reply

Terrible. Just terrible. Everything from the accent to her over the top acting.
