Message boards closing

Just saw the message above about imdb closing all their messageboards permanently later this month.

After 13 years of posting here in particular the Charmed board this saddens me so much. I may not be as active as I used to be but have always enjoyed revisiting here every few weeks or months for a catch up.

Thanks to all who have made this a lovely experience for Charmed conversations over the years. Take care all :(

I'm also very sorry to see this site close. I've been a member since 2009 and have especially enjoyed chatting Charmed with all of you - the reason I won't do it on any of the social media. I'm first to admit that Charmed is my guilty pleasure and I try hard to keep my personal life and my Charmed life separate - of all my family and friends only one knows I'm this big of a Charmed fan and only because she lives across the hall from me and we watched it together.

Also I won't do it on social media because I've checked Charmed out via these various media and those questions and short responses just don't interest me the way the discussions here have.

I often mention seeing something on another site that I want to share. I do the same thing with the stuff I see here that I like since unlike IMDb boards, they don't vanish after a few months. So I guess I'll just have to stick to posting there.

Smck, you've been one of my favorite posters. Thanks for all the fun!

Blessed be, everyone.

I've been posting on this IMDB board since 2004 I've been a member for about 12 years. I hate to see this site come to an end its great to chat with other Charmed fans, I may not be here all the time on this board I be on other boards Charmed is one that I will miss and all of you guys seem cool. I'm not into social media even though I have a facebook account I don't know any other site with a message board and site where you can discuss shows like Charmed. I tried joining Facebook groups of my favorite shows its not the same and not much is going on with those groups.

The charmed cafe is still open.

This is so sad... I've been posting on and off here since 2003. Still over so many years, I have continued to see many different interesting points or discussion brought up. IMDB definitely will not be the same without the message boards, especially Charmed board. I guess they are closing it because a lot of the boards are inundated with trolls, but the Charmed Board has never been like that.

It just sucks. And there reasons don't even make sense. Saying it's the worst comments section on the internet. I've seen worse

The closure is also partly influenced by the fact that on-site commenting is no longer many users’ preferred means of discourse. We’ve already seen a number of internet publishers shutting off commenting because it’s not worth the time to keep them spam-free and moderated. Discussion has instead shifted to other, larger social networks, like Facebook and Twitter.

IMDb notes this too, saying that increasingly IMDb’s users are commenting on its Facebook page and on Twitter, where, combined, it has an audience of over 10 million fans. The company also maintains accounts on Snapchat, Pinterest, YouTube and Tumblr, it says

I haven't really posted anything on this board for a long time and when I did it was mostly about how Cole wasn't treated unfairly and how his arc in Season 5 was good. With that being said, I have popped up quite often and read discussions you guys have had about charmed. I always enjoyed reading what JustEs had to say. Too bad IMDB is closing down.

Went hunting at other boards that were discussing the closing and found this interesting:

Well, trolling is at least their cover reason. And if so, what would be the real reason?
First, we all (Look I love discussing politics too) have to get over two things.

The left = This is all Trump

The right = This is all liberals.

No, and again, I've seen equal share of both doing their trolling.

This is gonna be the cover reason, the real reason....money. It's all bout money.
I think Vamp and what he found on reddit it the truth, the pure truth.

The thread, Ill copy it. ALL CREDIT GOES TO THE_VAMP_LORD. He found this, he posted it, this all goes to him.

[quote]This is no surprise whatsoever. I've worked at IMDb (the worst and most discouraging experience of my professional life ) and believe me, the company is a soulless, empty corporate shell that has one goal: to sell advertising. It's not about movies, TV, or being 'guardians of data' - everything is about making money. The entire site is setup to sell advertising, and movie data is simply a means to achieve that. End of story.

The reason IMDb is getting rid of the message boards is simple: they can't be monetized. If IMDb could make money out of the boards, they'd be staying, but there's no cash in it for them, so they're getting axed. The sell-outs who run IMDb will have looked at the 'metrics' (a risible corporate buzzword the Data Team loves so much) and decided that traffic is not high enough for them to make any real money.

It really is that simple. I've experienced first-hand the obsession with metrics, and making money (at the expense of customer satisfaction), and it really is pathetic to behold. No decision is made at IMDb without greed being factored into the equation, and believe me, they will also shut down certain data sections at some point if they get in the way of making money. Forget the fact that the site has compiled 20+ years worth of important data - if one of the sections can no longer be monetized effectively (Literature, for example), they'll just get rid of it, and dump the hard work of thousands of contributors without batting an eye.

In financial terms, keeping the message boards live costs IMDb basically nothing, bar the human cost of maintenance, which - when considered in the context of the site's huge annual profit margin - is less than minuscule. Still, community cannot get in the way of making money, and trying to increase the site's earning by 5-10% every.single.year.

There's no point complaining about it, making suggestions, or suggesting alternate, viable solutions - the hacks at IMDb don't give a toss. There's no money in it for them, so they're not interested. They'll fob you off with the usual hollow platitudes, but make no mistake, the IMDb that people love died years ago. Now, the site is just a shiny, corporate plaything, pimped out by Amazon for the purposes of making money, with greed - not customer focus - being its primary driving force.

One final note: it probably burns IMDb that the majority (over one third) of their users come from China, the audience for which is far less valuable to advertisers than, say, the USA and the UK. Only about 5% of IMDb's users come from the UK, which is ironic considering the site originated in England. But, I digress - IMDb stopped having relevance years ago; Letterboxd is far superior.

Now, do I think trolling maybe had a tad to do with it, sure. I think it's most financial, I don't think trolls did help matters though.

I also don't think the trolls have much to do with it - after all, if the trolls bug you that much, you just add them to your Ignore list, right? I have a huge one and it's help make going to the message boards fun. So I agree - it's all financial.

I just hope this doesn't mean the other message boards I enjoy will also go away...
