Masturbation scenes in movies make me uncomfortable

Especially when you're watching it with polite company like your parents. Then a surprise scene like Norman playing with himself shows up, they look over at you and they're thinking "yeah I bet he does that too".

It's so embarrassing! I can't even watch the original anymore without that tension in the room cropping up.

I agree. It was done with no class at all. It shows Norman is a creep from the start.
The original scene showed Norman was a tortured soul who never got to meet members of the opposite sex and just watched the girl with a longing for her, yet knowing his happiness can never happen.

Yes I get uncomfortable with masturbations scenes too - not sure why, maybe because of not liking a voyeur role, I dunno...

Anyway, I agree it was bit jarring character wise. Norman was not that sort of run of the mill creep, he was much more edgy and strange.

I missed it but I haven't seen the entire film. I shall pay more attention to the film when it loads.

Bored now.

I suppose it would be quite embarrassing to see that with your parents. I can certainly understand why you feel the way you do.

As for the scene, it really didn't bother me. The guy has no social life. No social skills. He had a dominating mother and he still keeps her alive in his twisted way. That doesn't mean he doesn't have his fantasies where women are concerned.
In that context I can see it as a natural thing for him to do. He's all alone and getting an eyeful through his peep hole so why not work off a little sexual tension?
I may get slammed for this but I can't help thinking that if it had been allowed in 1960, that scene would have played out the same way.

"Fasten your seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy night"

In the original it would be harder to feel some empathy had they showed him Mb. ..He would have came off as a pervert, not a lonely young man, with a longing for normal love. Vaughn looked like a perv. ..not lonely. Im not a prude...sex scenes dont make me uncomfortable. ..but in this movie it didn't fit. To keep the movie closer to the original...they should have kept mb out.

so gruesome murders being committed by a deranged psychopath do NOT make you uncomfortable but something normal, healthy and natural like masturbation does?

You are an example of why our world is so effed up.

Recently my friend saw Rogue one and said there was no immorality in it due to no swearing and no sexuality and somehow he did not find the gruesome and brutal MURDERS and maimings that occurred to be immoral.

reply

Right??? Oh it's totally fine if he's murdering people, I can still empathize with him. But masturbating? Something most, if not all, men do? Pffft. Unbelievable! Empathy go POOF!

People are ridiculous. Norman is fucked up enough to be murdering people, but masturbating is going too far??? Okay....

reply

Him masturbating showed he was no longer the child like innocence that made him creepy and it added nothing to the scene.

reply

Even innocents one mb

reply

But it added nothing to the scene, it's uncomfortable, OG scene was fine with it.

reply

They tried to reinvent Norman Bates. The OG was miles better obvs. Vince's acting was also nowhere near on Perkin's level

reply

Vince is like 6 foot 5 and stocky compared to Perkins.

The mb scene was just an excuse to be edgy or taboo.

reply

Norman is a chicken-choker in the original novel.

reply

It was no longer the child like innocence that's makes him creepy and off putting it's more just the fact he's a filthy pervert, he was much more effective without him jacking off.
