Actors who were considered to play Spidey for this film

Leonardo DiCaprio - Great actor, I would have liked to have seen that, but I don't think he would have wanted to commit to a franchise.

Freddie Prinze Jr. - No, Raimi was right not to cast him

Chris Klein - Poor choice in my opinion

Wes Bentley - Could have seen that, other than Tobey, he would have the closet thing to playing Peter Parker.

Heath Ledger - Interesting choice, but then again he wouldn't have been the Joker had it happened.

James Franco - Might have worked, but he did good as Harry though

Topher Grace - Could have worked a lot better with it than playing Eddie Brock

Scott Speedman - Dunno, I just don't see it.

Jude Law - Too old

Josh Hartnett - Not a bad choice

Elijah Wood - Interesting choice

Edward Furlong - Heard he was James Cameron's choice, like that choice if it weren't for his drug problems.

Frankie Muniz - The youngest on the list, dunno if I would have went with it.

I liked Tobey, but if I had to pick a second choice, I think Elijah Wood would have nailed the role.

It's weird to imagine James Franco playing Peter Parker since he played Harry so well. Topher Grace might have actually been good and maybe they could've had him play Peter a bit more assertive than Tobey did. Elijah Wood might have been a good choice. Thinking about it Frankie Muniz might have worked well.

Michael Jackson wanted the role.

I don't know about this film but I know Jake Gyllenhaal was considered to replace Tobey McGuire when it looked like he wasn't going to return for the sequels due to injury.

Wes seems more like Harry imo.

They aren't on the list but Adam Brody or one of the Ashmore Twins would have been great as spiderman imo. Topher Grace too, tho he d have to step up in dramatic scenes

Most of these actors were just too handsome to play Peter Parker. Don't get me wrong, Tobey Maguire was also a beautiful man, be he can also pull that geek/nerd looks without effort.

I think Topher and Elijah would have made an interesting choice, certainly

It's kind of weird that you don't list Jake Gyllenhaal who I read was at one point officially set to replace Tobey Maguire after he had suffered an injury. I think Gyllenhaal would have been better to be honest. I never knew Freddy Prince originally had the role but I think he might have come across as a bit flat. I know the nostalgic fanboys put him on a pedestal but I just never thought Tobey Maguire was very good & I was the target demographic, around middle school age at the time, so i should be just as nostalgic as anyone. I thought he was very awkward & stilted and not in a charming/endearing way. He also looked every bit a guy in his late 20s/early 30s playing a teenager which made it even more awkward.

I thought at the time Jake Gyllenhaal was by far the best choice and I still do now. Tobey Maguire was ok at the geeky nerdy aspect but came across too wimpy as Spiderman. Of all the others names list here - Elija Wood would have been similar to Maguire. Josh Hartnett has the charisma and physicality - but not sure he would be convincing as the geeky, nerdy kid Parker. Aside from those two - none were at all suitable for the role in my opinion.

It was a bit strange watching Jake playing Mysterio in the recent movie - playing the villain opposing Spiderman.
