Hey buddy, who are you calling an idiot.

I'm 21 and I was scared of this. (the only movie besides "the others" I was ever scared of.)

You have be able to use your imagination in order to be scared of things like this.

Yeah, why are 9 year olds scared of this?

I am not scared of this movie. And I am older than 9.

Also, WHy the hell can't babies walk?

I can walk. I am older than a baby.

Also, why can't new borns do calculus or trigonometry or advanced algebra?

I can do these.

Geez. I guess I am better than 9 year olds and new born babies!

I really needed to write this on a public notice board to make myself feel better about the fact that I got picked on at school.

Despite the OP's hysterical and unwitting admission of complete stupidity, I -19 at the time - actually found this the scariest film I had ever seen, and I don't really get scared by many films, as they are too slick, or rely on gore or all too human, fallible antagonists.

Apart from the poor acting from the humans, the way the aliens were portrayed was quite brilliant, and is key to the film's success. The film-maker left most of the work to the viewer, when glimpsing the creatures for moments; ambiguity is what works, not knives and masked killers. Even the craft had a reality to it; a functional piece of hardware designed for exploring other worlds, that interfered with the camera footage in that eerie way.

Compared to a cheap, under-produced film such as this, Hollywood's most elaborate horrorshows of recent years are laughable, especially The Fourth Kind.

I'm also 20 and this seriously got under my skin. The funny part is I saw it in broad daylight with a friend.

When it aired originally, there were no credits at the end to show that it was just a movie. Hence, it appeared real. To a thirteen year old kid watching it, CONVINCINGLY real.

I mean, let's cast aside the whole alien abduction bit. The thought of people entering a child's home, while Mom and Dad are home, hell, the whole family, are home, and causing a ton of discomfort to the adults can be pretty traumatic to a child.

Throw in aliens and a kid that doesn't know what they're seeing is just an illusion created for entertainment purposes, and well...you've got yourself one scared kid.

I hope you get you ass raped by a freaking alien

I haven't met a child who wasn't scared by a scary movie!

I was 15 when I saw it and it scared the ever loving *beep* out of me. Even when I realized it was a fake movie I was STILL freaked out by it. I am STILL freaked out at the thought of it from time to time. The version I saw had it end with the boy's family disappearing and he ends up in his room with an alien. THAT in itself was a scary thought to me. Being alone when you're in danger with no one else to turn to and your family, who you think you can be safe with, not being there to help you??! Yikes! *shuudddeerrr*

Heck this movie cemented my fear of alien abduction to go along with my fear of windows and ghosts. :b

Yeah, the original edit of the film is much scarier. I'm really not sure because I saw it when it first aired, but from what I remember, after everyone has disappeared, he goes to his room, then we get the cut of the bathroom breakdown scene I'm assuming, then we cut to him in on the bed, then the alien comes out from behind the closet and fade to black followed by the little disclaimer about "call if you know their whereabouts" or whatever. There were no credits and it just kind of ended. That's the original airing in the USA.

Now I'm just trying to make sense of my memory based on the version that's out there. For all I know there were linking scenes that have been deleted that better transition everyone disappearing but the main guy. I'm not sure but I know it all made much more sense in the original airing. I'm thinking the current ending is cut short in the original airing, and when everyone is frozen but the kid, they cut to the camera going scrambled then cut to this kid in his room as if to say he barely got away. This also presents us with the alien that "died" hid in his room rather than in the new edit where it just disappears. Does anyone have a clear memory of the original edit or does anyone have it taped off TV or something?

reply

YES YES YES

Yes!!!!

I found this after searching for it for a literal decade.
I saw this on a snow day in Ontario, Canada, around the age of 12, and nothing, nothing, has ever frightened me more.

I saw this original cut and was totally mystified that I had remembered it wrong when I watched this remake.

I MUST FIND THE ORIGINAL. Does anyone have a copy or any idea as to where to find one?
