Jake Hoyt & Smiley (spoilers!)

When Alonzo brought Hoyt to Smiley's house it was obviously a setup to have Hoyt killed. The only thing that saved his life was when Smiley discovered that Hoyt protected his daughter from being raped. But why did Alonzo do this? And why didn't Hoyt turn in Smiley and Alonzo to IA for attempted murder?

reply

First off, Hoyt saved Smileys younger cousin not daughter. Second, Alonzo setup Hoyt to be killed because he realized throughout the day Hoyt wasn't going " to be down" with how Alonzo and his crew operate. Example is at Rogers house when they dig up his $$$ from the floor and they all take a piece for themselves. That was Alonzo's lifeline cause of him having to pay the Russians a cool million. Hoyt wanted no part in taking a piece of the $$ which grew suspicion to the guys and Alonzo. Plus, Hoyt was going along with the story of how Roger was killed. Alonzo couldn't afford having to worry about Hoyt ratting them out. We obviously can't say for sure what happens the next day or beyond but I don't think Hoyt would turn smiley in. It was business and smiley did the right thing letting Hoyt go for saving his cousin. I think it would be smart by Hoyt to just let it go as well.

The day after would be a helluva movie.

Since there appeared to be many high rollers on the force, justice department, and legal system that were also operating above the law, nobody would likely verify Hoyt's claims about misconduct. Therefore, it would be in Hoyt's best interest to keep his mouth shut and try to tie up any loose ends on his own, otherwise he would likely do time for his involvement, whether he was complicit or not.

I think he would get Smiley and his crew though. They were about to execute a cop and didn't think twice about it. No way would Hoyt let animals like that walk the streets, even though there seem to be a code of honor that they respected, however screwed up it was.

They were criminals, they let hoyt go because he protected a family member earlier in the day, but help or assist hoyt....nah.

reply

If Hoyt is smart, he wouldn't turn Smiley in because he can use him as an informant in the future. This is probably how Alonzo got his start way back in developing relationships with the dealers and gangs back in the day.

Cop or not, I suspect nobody would ever again want to associate with a person who had no qualms in killing them and filling his own bathtub with brain matter, despite having woman and children in the house. It would have been traumatic for Jake just to drive back in Smiley's neighbourhood again, let alone meet up with him as an informant. Those dudes were just straight up killers, who Hoyt would have gladly avoided in ever meeting again!

There's a scene that was cut out of the movie but Smiley pretty much tell Jake that he will go high in the police dept and to remember him. That's pretty much saying that if Smiley gets in trouble, he will always have a "friend" in the dept.

It’s at the end of this link;

Smiley’s basically doing what Alonzo’s been doing, playing on Jake’s ambitions: “you went Sega, made the next level!”

Essentially he’s telling Jake to play ball (and not turn Smiley in), and he’ll make Chief.

The original written script actually would have made that scene awful. The original script calls for Jake to turn around, smile, and say, I will [remember you]." Dreamer also offers Jake some coffee. They did good to take that out.

I think they deleted this scene to avoid having Jake and Smiley appear too friendly . We are meant to presume they won't see each other again

1). Why did Alonzo pay the Mexican gang to kill Jake? Because Jake refused the money in Roger's kitchen, and Jake refused to shoot Roger. Alonzo then realized that Jake was a loose end who could expose them and ruin them. (Fact - after they leave Roger's, you can hear Alonzo talking on the cell phone inside his car. He says, "Make sure that bathtub is clean homey." He made arrangements to kill Jake at that point)

2). Why didn't Hoyt turn in Smiley? First, Smiley is a high-ranking dude, with connections (see how he knows about Alonzo's situation with the Russians and about Roger). So it wouldn't be easy to just arrest Smiley. Secondly, Smiley had just spared him when he really didn't need to. I think Jake will acknowledge the mercy that Smiley showed him.

3). Why didn't Hoyt turn in Alonzo? Probably cause Alonzo might talk his way out of the arrest. And after Alonzo left Jake to die painfully at the Mexican's, Jake probably preferred to have Alonzo get killed by the Russians.
