I loved Ethan Hawke in this movie. I thought he was great. I was shocked when I read they almost got Spider-Man for the part. With Maguire in the role, it would've been a very different movie.

shareMaguire would do well as the cop with a heart of gold, out of his elements on the street aspects of his role but it wouldn't be believable to have Denzel speak of his potential as the next "Alonzo". That aspect I think was perfect for Ethan Hawke.

shareI hadn't heard that before. I don't know if Tobey would have worked because he was so small and weak-looking. That's where Ethan Hawke really fit the role -- he was young, soft-looking; but you could still see him as a guy who could take you down if he needed to.
I had heard some rumors about Alonzo's role. I heard they considered John Travolta and Mel Gibson, in addition to Denzel Washington.
