Tobey Maguire almost played Jake

I loved Ethan Hawke in this movie. I thought he was great. I was shocked when I read they almost got Spider-Man for the part. With Maguire in the role, it would've been a very different movie.

That would have been interesting. There's something about Ethan Hawke. He and Denzel had such good chemistry. I don't know that Maguire would have brought the same vibe that Hawke did.

Maguire would have been way too rookieish I think. Can't picture him disarming Denzel or taking him in a fist fight.

Well Tobey did gain weight for the role and i think grew a beard as well. So his look what of been different

reply

No way he'd of been better than Ethan Hawke.

i think dj qualls should have played hoyt.

Maguire would do well as the cop with a heart of gold, out of his elements on the street aspects of his role but it wouldn't be believable to have Denzel speak of his potential as the next "Alonzo". That aspect I think was perfect for Ethan Hawke.

reply

That would've really sucked.

It's hard to picture anybody but Ethan Hawke playing the role. Toby Maguire certainly would've been an interesting casting though

reply

That would have been weird, this came out a year BEFORE Tobey played a teenager in Spiderman.

reply

I hadn't heard that before. I don't know if Tobey would have worked because he was so small and weak-looking. That's where Ethan Hawke really fit the role -- he was young, soft-looking; but you could still see him as a guy who could take you down if he needed to.

I had heard some rumors about Alonzo's role. I heard they considered John Travolta and Mel Gibson, in addition to Denzel Washington.

He would have been ok
