I was always curious if Todd really did intend to shoot Ronna in the parking lot before she was hit by the car. He cocked the gun and he was very angry about the perceived rip-off. That is what is so weird about this film, it is a comedy, but there are elements in the film that have a very serious overtone. I guess it is what we call a dark comedy?
the way i see it, if he was going to kill her, he would have shot her after she got ran over and was still alive. he knew she must have seen she was still moving.. or he would have shot her when she turned around to run. he was no killer.
then he didn't even take it out on claire (katie holmes) he tried to act tougher than he was.
I think it's just bad writing to be honest. The intent was to make it seem like he was, then we're thrown a curve ball. It's just very cliche. It would have been seriously stupid for us to think he was going to kill her.
His surprise reaction was pretty obviously he never was going to.
But the gun was just there to make us think he would, which is dumb. If he was going to kill her he'd just DO IT! He would sit there talking, holding a gun, and making us think whether or not he would.
If he was going to threaten her with it, then he would have done that too! But no, we get him crowding her, talking to her casually then suddenly pulling out a gun for a dramatic effect. Just really horrible writing there. If you're in a crowded area like they're at, you get in and get out. You don't stand around waiting for a crowd of people to see you.
He was just going to threaten her, maybe slap her at worst but I don't think he was going to kill her.
It's a little extreme to kill her over being burnt over X. Just because someone deals drugs doesn't mean they're a harden criminal.
He's B level criminal for sure. One that's probably never done real time, and definitely has never seen a dead body, let alone kill someone. He lives in a middle class neighborhood and deals drugs to a bunch of yuppies.
Come on, he's not some drug lord that's dealing smack to some hardcore gangsters, and he must send a drastic message. He's dealing to geeky Simon at the supermarket, and his cute and young drug addict friend Ronna. How much does he really have to do?
This is a guy in their world they definitely wouldn't want to cross. But he's not someone that's seriously looking to get the knee deep in trouble over a murder rap.
Killing someone that's going to lead back to you causes problems. If he killed her he had to know he'd be suspect number ONE! Come on, Claire was collateral and would be the prime witness that knows the entire story. He might have been a drug dealer, but he never struck me as stupid. It didn't take him long to find out the X was phony.
So it wouldn't make sense he'd be so fast to grasp one thing so quickly, then be dumb enough to kill someone and not know he'd get nailed for it.
Looking at it now, it seems like he doesn't have the experience, but there is a first time for everything. He's really surprised when she gets hit by the car. This could be taken 2 ways: 1) He's not used to seeing real violence first hand, or 2) He is bewildered that he got a get out of jail free card, for what he was about to do. I think it's both. I do think he was willing to do the ultimate, but was miraculously let off the hook.
Nah, just scare and threaten her, but when the car hits her it’s ‘punishment enough’ and he doesn’t want to get caught ferreting around a dead body for his money so he calls it a night.
