Anyone think this is Darren's undisputed best film?

One of my favorite directors, he's given us such greatness over the last 15+ years.

And though I loved the Wrestler and Requiem, I still say nothing comes close to the large amount of emotion Aronofsky was able to pack into such a 'small' film.

The feel was bleak and gritty, the characters were cruel and complex, and the plot itself just made for such a great story.

Not to mention that ending is beautiful no matter how you interpret it.

It's definitely his best movie.

Pi is without a doubt a good film. I haven't seen all of Aronofsky's films, but of those I have, Black Swan is my favorite. It was beautiful, then became beautiful and unsettling, then beautiful and puzzling, and finally gorgeous and horrific. The film blew me away. The cinematography reminded me of Michael Powell's work, and not just because of his film "The Red Shoes."

I enjoy black & white films, perhaps more than those shot in color, when the filmmaker uses b&w properly, as Aronofsky did with Pi. But, while I did not know the plot, I knew the story after five minutes. The film was still interesting, but there were no surprises for me. I stayed with this movie because of the director, the cinematographer, the editing, actors, etc. The film was that good. But because I already knew the story, Pi could not be a "ten" for me. Black Swan is.

CHANGE OF OPINION! I just saw "Requiem For a Dream" and I cannot remember the last time I have seen a truly perfect film. In my opinion, Requiem is a such a film. While watching the film, I was drawn into the world depicted and that just doesn't happen, not to this intensity. I wanted to look away, at times I wanted to stop watching, sometimes during very powerful scenes I wanted to turn Requiem off. But I couldn't (I read posts after seeing Requiem, and some people wrote they never wanted or couldn't see the film again).

Aranofsky created, of course with the help of the novelist, characters that I quickly grew to care for, and then to love. I didn't know how each character would come to his or her own grievous end, but I understood in my heart they all would, that this film did not have a happy ending. The tension of the film continued to increase to the point where it became almost unbearable.

When the film was over and the credits began, the feeling of overwhelming tension I had was released by crying for a few minutes (btw, I read a critique on the film's page written by a man who said that although he didn't know why, he cried when the credits began to roll). I felt better after my tears. I then began to think about every facet of the film. After long thought, I decided that, beside the screenplay, everything about Requiem came together with perfection. Therefore this is now my favorite Aranofsky film.

I am just curious - have you seen Requiem? Have you seen Noah yet? I enjoy finding other people who appreciate great avant-garde directors.

Yep, I've seen Requiem. It's really good. The whole last act is really a kick in the balls. Pretty powerful stuff.

Probably my third fave Aronofsky behind Pi and the Wrestler.

Haven't seen Noah yet but not hearing good things.. Have you seen it?

I just watched Pi again, because I didn't remember much about it. And I was pretty sure there would be a thread called "This is Aronofsky's best film" or something ;) It's like with Following (Christopher Nolan) or THX 1138 (George Lucas), some people have to always mention they are their favorites. No offence ;)

Actually, I wanted to see this movie again to make sure if it's better than Noah, and it PROBABLY is. So yeah, Noah might be Aronofsky's worst, but it's still good.

Yeah, but those movies suck (Okay well Following wasn't too bad). Pi is a masterpiece.

Definitely his most pretentious and obscure (I hate obscure, odd films like this in the style of Lynch's work). I love how people hate on a regular movie when it's not cohesive and comprehendable, but these kinds of films are given the excuse or whatever. The only film I really didn't like from Aronofsky.

it's the 2nd least good from him, but it's still good

Yes.

reply

Yeah, I think its his best work too. :)

Seemed less like a film and more like a film school project, mainly designed to show what the director can do technically. Story-wise I didn't get anything out of it.
