Made before the internet was big

as they describe snuff films as a unicorn that is extremely rare. Now, there are thousands of authentic snuff videos all over the internet.

"Now, there are thousands of authentic snuff videos all over the internet."

You know this? How?

reply

Videos like "Two Guys One Hammer" and Destroying Daisy" (or something to that effect) have been uploaded onto the web since this movie. Thankfully, the people behind these videos are often found out and punished.

reply

You and I appear to be having a different conversation. He claimed there are "100s" of snuff videos on the web. While I'm sure there are snuff videos in the darkest corner of the web, I'm curious what makes him think there are so many readily available; and how he knows this.

reply

I am just saying they are out there.

As for the OP saying there are thousands, that’s either hyperbole or it’s possible he is referring to the multiple death videos on the internet (Taliban beheadings, accidents, etc.) which are often called snuff films when it’s not quite accurate.

reply

Someone being murdered on camera is the very definition of a snuff film. Some sicario beheading a rival falls under that category.

reply

The definition of a snuff film is when someone is killed on camera for the purpose of distributing the film. Footage of people dying has been around for a long time.

reply

Dying on film is different (e.g. WWII footage). How does ISIS recording themselves throwing gays off a rooftop (murder) and then uploading it to the internet not meet your definition of "distributing the film"?

reply

Because ISIS does that as an act of terrorism and wants it to be seen without the desire to charge people money to see it. A snuff film is produced for monetary purposes and isn't usually widespread since the police would likely shut down the operation.

reply

No, snuff films are specifically defined as pornographic films that include murder

reply

So like I said... they’re for profit.

reply

Reddit is one of the largest websites on the internet, and not long ago one of their largest subreddits called WatchPeopleDie. Several videos of people dying were posted there every single day, and plenty of those videos were of poor schlubs getting executed. r/watchpeopledie is gone, but All those videos are still out there (and more being added every day), but you have to look a touch harder to find them.

The film also somewhat predicted the modern day computer technology with how Cage used his laptop to duplicate the film etc.

reply

Liveleak, documentingreality. Hell, just go on 4chan and start a REKT thread.

You can go on /b/ and in 30 minutes there'll be a video of the cartel burning a guy's face down to the skull, a Russian guy getting sucked into a lathe and turned into hamburger mean, and six videos of Chinese guys pushing scaffolding into a live wire and electrocuting themselves.

reply

My thoughts yesterday as I was watching 8mm:

"Ah, the good old days, before you could just go to 4chan and see as many snuff videos as you want."

"Well... actually, come to think of it... those aren't really snuff films per se. Snuff films are supposed to be made specifically for perverts. 99% of the stuff I'm thinking of is made by terrorists for political reasons, or made by drug cartels to punish snitches and intimidate would-be snitches, smartphone vids of street fights that go too far, random road or workplace accidents... none of those are really snuff films in the way they always portrayed them back in the day, where'd they'd kidnap some random chick and kill her on camera for no other reason than to create content for real sickos to get off on."
