Wow, what a bad movie

This movie is slow paced, historically innacurate and teriible cast. Choosing between what is worse Jewell's acting or Toby's dry dialogue is like choosing which way you want to commit suicide. Instead of focusing on the war we are instead treated to bush-wacking in Bumscrew, Missouri. The editing is as bad as a snuff film. If you are thinking of watching this movie do yourself a favor and stay home and watch home videos of your drunk uncle groping your cousin at the family wedding.

I agree. Unexpectedly terrible. It's amazing Ang Lee survived this.

We're watching this in my Missouri History class, and while I'm no film buff, it seems like a great film to me.

I am really surprised and confused how some people thought this movie was so bad?
Did you see the same movie as me?
I thought it was EXCELLENT!
Crazy...

It WAS excellent!! Though I didn't care for Jewel's acting (she should stick to singing), I thought this was a great period piece. Other than Josey Wales, where else does one see the Missouri conflict during the Civil War? I've watched this thing a dozen times - it will never get old. For those who think this is the worst movie, I sure would like to know what they think is the best one!!

This movie was so bad it was good. Good in the same sense as Plan 9 From Outer Space.

The dialect was perfect. I lived in Kearney, MO, still talk like that, and still have some gorgeous bushwhacker curls. This movie gets me so pumped about my own regions history. To think that we were all so brutal, cutting each others heads off and stuff.

Oh, and did anyone get the impression that the albino dude in Cold Mountain was in some way based off of the bad guy in this movie?

reply

I loved it. I do have an interest in that time period anyway but I thought the film was great. but each to his own

reply

i agree....lol! but it was kind of hilarious.
and i do love jonathan rhys meyers....so that was a plus, but otherwise, very very very disappointing.

I won't have as emotional a reaction as a die hard lover of the movie, but I can't understand why you would think this movie is bad.

It gives a lot of hope to modern movie making. The sixties and seventies ruined the Western with stereotypical spaghetti characters. Now, we get the realism of sets along with more realistic characters.

This is a true anti hero movie. He isn't "right" in what he does, but he is motivated. We understand and believe the method to his madness. A lot of humore in the scenes with the girl help to make the story multi dimensional.

In summary, this film is far superior to most films made since the golden era of the fifties. I believe it was a success for the directing, writing, and acting team.

Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time

Could not disagree more. This and Outlaw Josey Wales are two of my fav civil war flicks....

You MUST be joking.

I'm more of a horror movie geek so you can bet I've seen some truly horrible movies, and Ride With The Devil in no way qualifies as a bad movie. I get the feeling the OP has been watching too many moronfests with Will Ferrel/Adam Sandler/Ben Stiller to know a good movie when they see one.

reply

Uh, you're kidding, right? Because it was a brilliant movie.
