Who else thought B.E.N. ruined the movie?

I actually thought Treasure Planet was kind of good, until B.E.N. (that crazy robot) showed up. I know he's important to part of the plot towards the end, but I just found him to be annoying and stupid, especially with his sudden outbursts. It also would have made more sense to put him in earlier in the movie, instead of near the end. Does anyone else feel the same?

Yes, I think B.E.N. was a stupid character. Everything about this movie was good except that robot. I get it, Disney wanted to put a bungling idiot as a comic relief that will in the end help save the day but I think that character was incredibly annoying. My only guess would be that Disney wanted B.E.N. to be stupid with the sudden outbursts because they think kids (and some adults) would think it's hilarious. I will never understand that.

He didn't exactly ruin it (because it's still a great movie)but yeah, I didn't really care for the character either. He had some funny moments, but most of the time he was too hyper.

Oh, and it sucks to write him into fanfiction :P

I didn't really care about B.E.N., to be honest.. Although I have to admit I almost pissed myself when he sang A Pirate's Life For Me..

Death is the day worth living for!

ugh yes he kills it for me, i try to fast forward his scenes. i'm embarrassed to recommend this film to people because of him actually. shame because the first half is so strong
He's one of those guys who needs a hug but he doesn't want anybody to watch- Norman on Daryl

I just watched this movie for the first time in a very long time last night. When I did I was surprised with the character of B.E.N. I remembered him, and remembered he was extremely annoying, but watching it last night I was struck with how similar B.E.N. is to Carl the robot from Meet the Robinsons.
I feel almost like Carl is B.E.N version 2 and they almost got it right with him. He's hyper, prone to, well, freaking out, and has a slightly grating voice, but he's not a prominent character. They seemed to keep Carl's parts to a minimum more-or-less, and that made him much less annoying and grating. I think that may have been the piece of the puzzle they missed with B.E.N. When you have a character like him a little goes a long way and in the second half of the movie it's like we're being beat over the head with B.E.N. If they'd made him less prominent, had him appear less frequently and/or had him have moments of calmness in between the panic attacks and wild behavior like Carl the character may have been much more bearable (maybe even likable) and maybe the movie would have been just a little bit better in general.

I like your points.

That being said, for my money B.E.N. and Jar Jar Binks can rot in hell together.

I honestly don't remember a version of Ben Gunn who didn't annoy me, so that was just par for the course. It's been awhile since I read the book, so I can't recall how bad he was, there. In his defense, though, he's been marooned for years. No one comes outta that totally sane.

If anything else in the movie didn't already ruin it, B.E.N. sure did.

I was under the strong impression they picked a famous comedian, told him to be loud and funny like Robin Williams was with Genie, and let him go at it. Except it was Martin Short. I don't think they foresaw it being as bad as it came out. For a lot of stuff actors have ad-libbed for Disney movies, things have worked out well. I do not think this was one of them.

I'm going to quote the Nostalgia Critic/Doug Walker: Loud =/= funny. Oh my god. I wish movie making people would understand that. Taking a sentence that isn't funny and then YELLING it at sponTANEOUS points doesn't MAke it funny. I think they've sort of learned that since this movie was made, but they sure believed it back in the '90s.

I understand the character was supposed to be glitched out, but he didn't need to be so loud.
