Did You Think Laura Dern Overacted?

There were good performances by the cast but I felt like Laura Dern was chewing the scenery. She was trying too hard and it looked unnatural.

Not in the least, she was perfect. In fact, her performance was inspirational.

Maybe what you deem as overacting is how she was directed. It could be people that really knew the character she was portraying (like Homer Hickham) explained to Miss Dern how the real person expressed herself.

Being a female teacher at that time her character (correctly) was limited. You can see this in the lunch scene w/ Homer and the rocket and the Principal...The arrest scene when she got pissed about the handcuffs and was told to settle down, etc. Part of her role in the film was "knowing her role" as that teacher at that time and place.

I thought she did a great job.

This film is a bit sentimental, but as enough grit to feel real. I liked all the characters.
