Why didn't Lauren Ambrose (Denise) have a bigger, more high-profile career?

I know that she was later on Six Feet Under, but as this article points out, since about 2005, her screen career has somewhat fizzled:

Ambrose grew up in New Haven, and began acting in her teens. She also studied voice at Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute. Ambrose became known in the late 1990s for the teen comedy Can’t Hardly Wait and for starring in the cult classic Psycho Beach Party. She then became a two-time Emmy nominee as Claire Fisher on HBO’s Six Feet Under.

But since about 2005, Ambrose’s screen career has fizzled somewhat. She has worked in indie films, and had a few TV movie and miniseries roles. Her stage career, however, has prospered.

Ambrose made her Broadway debut in a 2006 revival of Clifford Odets’s Awake and Sing! She appeared as Juliet and Ophelia in Shakespeare in the Park productions of Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet. Last year, Ambrose enjoyed the biggest success of her career. She starred as Eliza Doolittle in the Broadway revival of My Fair Lady, and was nominated for the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical (and several other honors).

Ambrose has been cast as one of the leads in a series M. Night Shyamalan is developing for the Apple network.

One theory that I read is that while Lauren is incredibly talented (as an actress, singer and comedienne) she's none the less, difficult to cast. And she's not really had a good role since "Six Feet Under" ended.
