Why did Amanda even go/stay at the party?
She looked miserable the whole time and wasn't socializing with anyone (besides her cousin)- not even her friends...
"Dope sick? Dope schmick!!"

I guess she had to make one final appearance with her graduating class while sitting on her high horse.
shareCould be, or it could be she was just curious about the whole affair.
shareShe was little miss popularity. She went and stayed because she's programmed that way. Her arc in the movie is realizing just what a little snob and social butterfly she's been, when she doesn't even know who Preston is and has to learn about him by asking around.
I guess the meek can inherit the Earth now. It looks like the stupid aren't doing anything with it.
1. If she didn't go, then everyone would think it was because she was too ashamed to appear in public after Mike Dexter dumped her.
2. She never really had the chance to meet classmates outside her circle, and maybe she wanted to meet some of them before they all took off for college or the real world. She stayed with her cousin a little longer than she had planned because she was trying to work up the courage to greet strangers, and because she was sad about Mike.
3. Party would have provided closure for her with Mike, her "friends", and her role as Miss Popularity.
She wanted to prove that it wasn;t all about high school. yeah I got dumped, but here i am . Who gives a crap.
shareWell if she wanted to prove that she didn't care about getting dumped why is that all she talked about there? It would be one thing if she went to the party to have a good time, but she didn't do anything but mope around with her water bottle whining about how no one knows her as anything but Mike Dexter's girlfriend whah, whah, whah....
shareMaybe she wanted to show people that Mike breaking up with her was not ruining her like Mike thought his break up would look like.
shareThe biggest thing that's always bothered me with this movie is the Mike acted like that throughout the relationship with Amanda and she (apparently) seemed to be fine with it then. There is no way she wasn't a semi-bully or the ultimate stuck up girl who was permanently with a jock. (Come on. Someone else has to know exactly what I mean by that?) So I have to wonder what made her suddenly "realize" after school was done, so was she with him. Amanda clung to him for the popularity as the new girl and to get into the high ranking activities with the good looking jock. She used him. She was in no way innocent or a nice person. And I never thought her and Preston would have made it too long because of that selfishness.share
The author of this piece is repeatedly down on Preston, yet has no apparent issue with a character who is established as having spent almost all of her high school years dating a boy who’s a blatant example of toxic masculinity. In equal measure, her clique of girlfriends are also revealed to be selfish, gossipy, superficial twits. Yet she clearly accepted her role within this group with no problem. All it takes is a moment of conscientious evaluation to realize Amanda was a shitty person in her own right, one who was absolutely willing to condone the poor values and crappy behavior of her peers in the name of social status. There’s no high road here.
Maybe it was because the writer needed her there
shareBecause the fans were already set up for her grand entrance.
shareThe plot required her to attend
