My husband liked it, but he didn't know anything about Andy Kaufman. When you see the first two minutes of it -- if you're a fan of anything Kaufman did, even if he lost you with the wrestling bit -- you know you're in for one bad ride.
After a while I got used to the non-Andy and took it for what it was, but I still felt compelled to show my husband what Andy's schtick really was like. He didn't care for it.
Andy was one of a kind, and even though Carrey obviously admired him, he wasn't a good Andy. I don't think anyone could have been a good Andy but Andy.
Two other gripes -- his daughter wasn't even in it, and they made it look as if he started being a busboy because he'd rather work there than Taxi. I remember a retrospective of his life where he'd said he wanted to keep one foot on the ground, so he worked as a busboy. Otherwise, Hollywood was crazy.
Said the man who took crazy beyond the limit. But I also saw a clip of Marilu Henner saying that Carrey never "got" Andy just being Andy. He played him as though he was always "on."
When evil is viewed as good, righteousness is viewed as evil.
