Failed to explore WHY Kaufman did what he did...

The big problem with the film was that it failed to explain the why of Andy's behavior. Producers could have focused on a two-three year period in Kaufman's career. This would have been so much more interesting. Instead the film stands as Carrey doing a Kaufman impersonation of events and things that we already know... Missed opportunity.

Anyone else feel this way?

Nobody could've done that. Nobody knew what was going on in his head. Nobody was 100% sure which of the things he did were pranks and which weren't. That being said, in the movie, he tries to explain to others why something he's doing is meant to be funny. That's as good as it gets.

the film stands more as a reenactment of Kaufman's shenanigans and various stunts. There is absolutely ZERO insight into any of them or him for that matter.

Exactly. It didn't go deep enough. I still enjoyed it though, it got me into the man himself. But I understand why fans were dissapointed. This movie is basically a greatest hits compilation.

If I don't reply, you're probably on my ignore list for something I forgot already

There's never any point in explaining humour.

Why did Groucho have a painted moustache? Why didn't Harpo speak?

Why did Chaplin have a bowler hat? Why were there three stooges when most comedy partnerships are pairs? Why did Bob Hope choose Bing Crosby as a comedic partner?
