Favorite line or scene?

I just loved the whole elevator-church thing, but there were several other good ones in this movie. What´s your favorite line or scene?

Oh, and by the way, what were "I love Lucy" and Troy´s answer to it about? I just didn´t get it...

I love the whole scene in the swing bar, especially the dance scene. Unfortunately, there seems to be no mention in the cast and crew list of the choreographer or whoever instructed Brendan Fraser and the two women he danced with.

Adam:"hot dog, thank's for calling me on the telephone!"

reply

Adam Shankman did the choreography. Blast from the Past (1999) [choreographer]
I just noticed his name in the credits last night.
Are the two women listed as miss sweet and heather?

reply

And that scene is also, in my opinion, the best part. From the time they enter the bar until they leave, it's just classic. This film had some great writers.

reply

My favorite scene, as well, because I love 40's swing music and because I can swing dance, both 40's style and country swing.

I spend my money on dope, sex and cheap thrills.
The rest of it, I waste.

reply

It's the reverse: Adam responds to Troy's "I Luv Sushi." with "I Love Lucy."

reply

Helen Thomas Webber: "Look for something called a liquor store. Write that down".

reply

Adam: "I think I'm being chased by a psychiatrist."
Arch Bishop: "It happens."

reply

I love Eve's reaction when she finds out that Adam went home with Sophie

reply

I thought it was funny when Adam said "Oh my lucky stars! A Negro!"

and i liked the whole nightclub scene...

reply

I liked Silverstone's love-lorn/jealous expression when Adam hits it off with the bimbos in the nightclub.

You know me. I'm just like you. It's two in the morning and I don't know nobody.

reply

Adam's reaction when he looks out his hotel window is classic.

I love how Troy turns Adam's words intoasexual innuendo. "How 'bout it, Eve? Can he skate around your block? Just a few laps." The way he says it makes me laugh every time.

first when christopher walken has the heartattack. the noise he makes is hilarious. like a short "OOF!"

and the part where he pops in the window and scares sissy spacec and she drops her drink everywhere.

and other lines mentioned above.

Single-minded till the point of recklessness.

reply

"No, I was going to ask you why Cliff likes to wear another man's underwear."

reply

The dance scene at the night club and Eve's reaction when Brendan's character went home with Sophie.

reply

Yeah Eve, can he "skate" around your "block"?

reply

To all the posters above - thanks!! I laughed out loud as I read each one. Since I can't top the lines, just want to mention that Christopher Walken's glasses needed to be repaired down there and he used some kind of medical tape. As a person who tries to repair and salvage usage myself, I found that touching since he was a scientist who arranged everything except a spare pair of glasses.

reply

Every time I see that part, I laugh. The way he says it. The mail lady's reaction. It's so funny.

reply

Like Molly Ringwald in '16 candles', I can watch any scene with Alicia pouting or mugging away! She and Dave Foley are wonderful together. I love his speech about manners and gentlemen. 'He got it from the strangest source - his parents. I don't think I got that memo from mine...' The way he tosses off that line! 'she doesn't need a boy - she needs a man'. Miss Sweet's 'man-eater' eyes on the dance floor. WOW - and she does look so sweet.
This is a perfect movie without any wasted scenes or characters.
[Snapping fingers and] a big thumb's up to Rev Melker, the dour butcher, 'hey, that's my car!' Eve's ex smoothly displacing Adam from his seat. 'you can have it back now'. Adam sees the ocean... LOVE THIS LITTLE MOVIE.
Like Adam, we all fell in love with Alicia the first time we saw her. sigh

reply

HAHA~!!!... LOVE that one!!!

Adam wouldn't know what sushi was, so Lucy was his only reference. Like the first thing that came to his head.

reply

"Well who doesn't?"

reply

Eve: Here ya go, one champagne cocktail.
Adam: Oh, thank you.
Eve: I thought only hookers drank those things?
Adam: Well, I know Mom sure likes 'em.

He's taking the knife out of the Cheese!
Do you think he wants some cheese?

I agree with notesfromunderground...ha ha, the thing about ralph lauren's underpants...lol

"I was just wondering why he likes to wear another man's underpants" or whatever he said, ha ha

reply

I love the bit where Eve turns to Adam and says:

Eve: By the way, he's gay.
ADAM: Well good for you.
Troy: Well, we try.

It's Troy's delivery and look that makes it perfect.

There are just so many othet great lines. The look Eve gives Adam's mom when she tells her she's from Pasedena, was just wonderful.

The line about living under a porn store in the Valley was priceless as well.

Eve: I see he was trying to make those dancers as comfortable as possible...
Troy: He didn't go home with them...
Eve: *sigh of relief and smiles*
Troy: ... he went home with Sophie.
Eve: AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
---
Troy: Sophie do you check these or are they carry on?
---
*Adam defends himself and is able to jab Cliff in the face*
Jason: Nice move.
---
Eve: Adam please, she has bitch written all over her! You do know what BITCH means, don't you?
Adam: Yes... I do have a dictionary, but I don't see why you'd say that about her, or why Troy would say that about you.
*Eve gives dirty look to Troy*

Just checked, and I thought it was odd at the time but it must have been a mistake, I am typing as its playing to get it right:

Eve: Adam! She's got bitch written all over her. You do know what bitch means don't you?

Adam: Yes... Yes I do. I do have a dictionary. But I can't understand why you would say that about her, or for that matter why *Cliff* would say that about you?

Cliff is her ex-boyfriend Mr Legs, Butt and Hair. Sorry to make a correction, but I thought for the sake of accuracy I would, espcially as I am watching it now.

====
I always liked the guy at the meat counter in the store:

Butcher: "You could get a meat order that big delivered to your home."
Adam: "Really?"
Butcher: "Sure."
Adam: "Oh, thats terrific, except its just occoured to me that I don't know where home is?! I'm lost! Do you know where I live?"
Butcher: "No."
Adam: "Will you please excuse me?"
Butcher: "Gladly."

Said with such a deadpan expression, he doesn't look supprised at the odd customer standing before him.
====

I do dearly love the rest of the quotes. But can you beat:

Calvin: "But I don't understand."
Adam: "I'm asking you to trust me without understanding why."
Calvin: "In that case ofcourse."

====

Not forgetting:

Street Walker: "...I can be anything you want me to be."
Calvin: "Really?"
Street Walker: "Uh Huh. And its all yours for the remarkably low price of $200 and if you act now I may even throw in some lawn furniture, now how about that?"

reply

hahaha I like the part when Adam was on the bus and he was sitting with that one guy on the bus with the gun...hahah priceless

Adam: Thank-you for not waving your gun around...

=)

reply

What? The crazy looking guy on the bus had a gun? I missed that and I've watched this at least a dozen times. That would tend to explain why he says to Eve, "I don't have a gun" which I thought was coming out of nowhere. I'll have to check my DVD. Los Angeles people. That's why the butcher had the bored expression - he's seen it all.

reply

Adam asks him if he has a gun because his dad's story about what it was like on the surface. If I remember right, he asks just before the bus starts moving and he grabs the seat in front of him and tells everyone to hold on.

reply

The way Calvin relates that scene to Helen back in the house is hysterical:

Calvin: I mean, they're offering LAWN FURNITURE as a come-on!
Helen: (gasps) No!

And then she runs to the kitchen to scrub the sink! Hilarious!

And of course, all of the above. I need to watch this movie again...

reply

and Sophies reply was nicely balanced and *right*

Troy: Sophie do you check these or are they carry on?
Sophie : carry on

showing that she was no slouch at repartee

reply

I love this precious little movie. There are a dozen lines that make me laugh out loud, even after the 20 something viewing, but there are two that have influenced and informed my life:

Adam: Manners are a way of showing other people we care about them.

Troy: I know, I mean I thought a "gentleman" was somebody that owned horses. But it turns out, his short and simple definition of a lady or a gentleman is, someone who always tries to make sure the people around him or her are as comfortable as possible.

reply

I liked that quote also GaryHill. It was one of those lines that makes you think about how some movie lines can change your perspective on life.

"War does not determine who is right, war determine who is left".

reply

When his parents give Adam his birthday presents: "Oh Boy! A Jacket!" He's so funny!
"What the heck are these?" in reference to the skates.

Oooh, talking of skates, I like the scene when Adam skates in the park, he looks great. And then he runs into the sea.
I love the childlike qualities of Adam, so cute.

reply

I like in the 1972 bar when that disco song comes on, and Arch Bishop Melker is like: Oh Man! Im not sure I Like That!....(Starts Showing off)

reply

[deleted]

I feel the same way. I learned so much watching this film, with it's humor and it's positive message behind it.

reply

i love that whole conversation!...

Eve: "Where do you suppose he got all of that information???"
Troy: "oh.. from the ODDEST place: his PARENTS!... i mean, I don't think I got that memo from mine"

....

...
Eve: "I'm his PIMP!"

reply

There are so many but one that always cracks me up is when Adam is in Eve's car and asks her to change radio station back because he heard Perry Como song.

Then he's snapping fingers to this old Perry Como "Round and Round" song and totally into song and says he could "just die" and Eve says "Over this???"

reply

I love the part when he hears Perry Como on Eve's car radio and says, "Listen to this part. This is where it really takes off. What for it...There." as if he's listening to some cool guitar solo or something. Classic.

I also like the conversation with the butcher and the Holiday Inn bell hop.

reply

When he was explaining to his dad that the soviet union collapsed.

reply

This is one scene I've never been sure of - does she really like Perry? Is she really getting off on it, or is she humoring him, until she gets him out of the car? Not sure if I don't get it, or this scene wasn't well edited. Anyone?

reply

I love the part where Adam and Eve are done with putting stuff in storage and she is driving him back to the hotel in the rental truck and the music is playing and Adam is snapping his fingers, grooving out to the music and Eve turns it off and Adam looks at her with that goofy grin and raises his eyebrows at her and she says goodbye. HAHAHAHA!!! I re-wind and re-wind that one.
Also, when Eve says to Adam, "I can get you laid in 2 weeks, but a wife..." The questioning look on his face...PRECIOUS!! lol

reply

"Not sure it was the funniest, but at the very end, the elderly Christopher Walken starts measuring out his backyard for a new fallout shelter!"

Hey, given how crazy things got two years after this film was released, maybe a new fallout shelter wasn't such a loony idea!
