If you read the Cube film series Wikipedia page carefully you will see that the director wrote a script for a short sequel showing the outside of the cube, but destroyed it shortly after (it never got filmed).

reply

it wasn't a sequel, it was the original ending for the film.

Taken from the Wikipedia page; 'The film's writer, Vincenzo Natali, apparently wrote a script detailing the world outside the Cube, but destroyed it after deciding not to create a movie about it.'

reply

well, it's wikipedia.Everybody can edit there.

Here are the facts, directly from Natali (taken from the bonus material of the cube DVD):

Spoilers.

In an earier draft of the script, it wasn't left ambiguous where the cube stands and who was behind it. The answer is a easy, as it is lame: aliens. Aliens wanted to test humans. This is shown in the original ending, which takes place right after the ending we know (surviving inmate walks into the white light) and shows that the cube isn't on earth, but in fact on a purplish planet. In the background we hear a "metallic ocean sound", whatever that is supposed to be. Also there were multiple scenes, indicating the alien solution. Natali only mentioned one in particular, which according to rumors is still intact on one of the official releases, in the "deleted scenes" section. In that scene the group finds a candy wrapper with alien lettering on it (i kid you not). At one point Natali decided that it was more effective to end the film with the "white light", changing the films meaning completely. so the ending and all alien related scenes were removed an "burned". I guess they also rewrote some of the dialogue, since "worth's monologue" pretty clearly gives us all the infos we need to know about the cube as it is meant in the final version. That speech would not really make that much sense in the alien context.

Thanks for sharing that info. I always assumed the 'outside world' script was something cooked up after the films release and later abandoned, but I was probably mistaken. I have the 2 disc version (if that's the one you're referencing) but have not had chance to look at the special features yet. I know the original film was meant to have alien references inside the cube but was changed due to it being too obvious who was behind it.

has Cube got a 2 disc special edition?

what special features is on it, ive just seen the interview with Nicole and some pre production drawings.

id love to see more on Cube.

reply

Yes, it is the French 2 disc edition released my Metropolitan. Below is some info on it:

http://www.zetaminor.com/dvd/dvdreviews/cube.htm

Also an ebay link for a copy of it (others may be available, this is the first I came across):

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cube-Edition-Collector-2-DVD-DVD-/291481655177?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item43dda91789

I had a quick look at disc 2 when I first got it and there about 8/9 short interviews with Natali, it also has some Cube 2 clips hidden on it.

reply

awesome. i need that one.

my infos are from the single disc uk edition. it still has 2 or 3 commentary tracks, some deleted scenes and a couple of interviews and a short film, but a 2 disc edition would be even better.

reply

What UK edition is that? My UK edition only has a trailer, storyboards and a commentary.

Actually, when the cube forums were still open, I think they kinda pinpointed the ending's location, and it was somewhere in Vancouver.

When Andrew Miller was being asked about the ending, he said something along the lines of ''I may have ended up on a different planet, different reality, who knows, I'm sworn to secrecy'' so it is completely feasible that he could have ended up on a different planet.

And, it is rumored that it was supposed to be an alien food, found on the walls, instead of a candy wrapper. And, as far as I know, none such scene even exists, and I haven't heard of anything like that ever being filmed

It's interesting, that in the original script of Cube 2 (which wasn't similar to Hypercube at all), there is also an ending near an ocean, and it's all foggy around the main survivor, but I don't think it was supposed to be on a purple planet (or at least the writer never referred to it like that). If it was on an alien planet, then at least (thankfully), it wasn't purple.

facts (directly from natali on multiple occasions):

- it was a candy wrapper with alien lettering on it
- the original ending was that they were on an alien planet. the opening of the cube lead indeed to a purple beach, making a "mechanical noise"

That "alien world" ending sounds too much like "The Quiet Earth," which is a much better movie, better acted, etc than this one.
