just watch the sequels and make ure own mind up. r u that important that u cant spare a couple of hours to watch films in a franchise u so clearly enjoyed.
theres lots of cubes and traps. some die some dont. and yes theres tension.
This plot is actually quite common if you look at the basic concepts, there aren't a lot of films that pull it off the right way though.
I could compare this film to the original Alien film, very much.
Also John Carpenter's 1982 version of The Thing has a similar dark atmosphere in closed quarters feel.
there are even films that aren't so Horror that have a similar feel in many ways. Lots of films in space have that solitude feeling, like the more recent film Moon, or of course the classic 2001:A Space Odyssey which you can't live without seeing.
As far as finding another good sci-fi film that involves solving a deadly puzzle to save 6 people's lives, not as far as I know.
Anyway, Good luck on your search, I should have answered this maybe during the day when I had a clearer head, than while I'm about to go to bed. I'm shocked that I've been able to form any kind of complete sentence.
If I think of any others later I will come back and let you know.
I'm actually working on a script for a film with a similar feel. So I did do a bit of research to get a feel for what makes a film like this truly work, and the sequels to this film fail miserably. There should never be an excuse of how low budget a film is if you have a solid idea, some good actors, and a willingness to be clever without the cash.
Vincenzo Natali is known for this, if you check out his other films you may not be disappointed. I really recommend Nothing, although his film Cypher is just okay. But I do recommend seeing Splice, if you're up for something a little bit different and a bit controversial. If you can keep an open mind I really think Natali did a great job with it. Also if you so happen to get a copy of Terry Gilliam's Tideland there is a little treat on the second disk in the form of a documentary from Natali, definitely my favorite on Gilliam.
I guess I'm not too tired to ramble...but I never really am. anyway, obviously all of that information is going to be on imdb.com anyway, so I'm out of it enough to give you pointless information ... and continue rambling...
Good luck on your search, it's a great premise for a film when done correctly.
Tideland, Cypher and Splice, I've seen them and loved them so I'll definately check out 2001 and the thing, not so sure about the alien tho, I've had a deep fear of them ever since my little brother had one of those alien figures when he was younger, it totally scarred me for life lol.
Sometimes I can't tell whether your signature is part of your post or not
May I ask do you know a black and white horror/comedy like the Cube where a door closes and another one rolls into place? The film ends with a birdseye view of the rooms moving on. The actors keep finding a different room behind the same door.
Great movie, have seen it several times. It has the feel of Cube, but not quite the same. For that matter, I truly cannot think of anything just like Cube.
