Maybe I'm going to Hell, but this movie is hilarious. When Juliette Lewis absolutely goes nuts at the country club you can't help but piss yourself laughing because it's so horrible. I'm not mentally disabled, nor am I close to anyone who is, but if I was I'd be absolutely digusted and offended at this movie. The actors play their roles as if they were six year olds trapped in adult bodies.

The directing was also terrible, there are certain shots in this movie that come out of nowhere. Like when Daniel climbs down from the balcony and asks Carla to marry him. Out of nowhere there is this harp sound and the two look over to see the harp player smiling at them for no apparant reason at all. Watch for it, it is hilarious.

All in all, it's innaccurate and offensive. At one point when Daniel is drunk, Ernie actually throws something to distract him like a cat. But that's why this movie is so fun to watch, especially with a group of friends. The message is nice and all, but it's such a farce.

its funny that juliette lewis played a retarded person in this movie, and then she is acting in what's eating gilbert grape with leo who is also playing a retarded person. both of them do a bad job of it. it just looked like they were drunk. maybe thats how they did it? just got drunk before a scene?

I thought Juliette was totally hot.
She was retarded, I dont know what to say.
I guess retards need to get laid too, Ive been into her for a while, but her role in this movie does something to me that I cant really explain.

If you're going to hell , I'll join you there, because I laugh my ass off at this movie , and it's not because they are handicapped (well PORTRAYING handicapped) but because I always find it funny when someone who isn't mentally disabled plays someone disabled ( I.E Juliet Lewis in The Other Sister, Leonardo DiCaprio in Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, etc). So if I'm going to hell for laughing at an ACTOR , so be it, I don't laugh at the real ones, in fact I donate to multiple charities, it's not a crime to laugh at an actor. So Yuck it up people! When the faux-tard gets half her face done in makeup then bitches because the other half isnt done for free, I damn near piss myself.

Inaccurate?? Try living in the shoes of a disabled person. I have several friends who have dealt controlling parents who can't let their disabled child grow up and live an independent life. So you are obviously brain dead.

OK here's the thing with this movie.......

not everyone who is "retarded" acts a certain way.

my older sister is mentally challenged (as i like to say i hate the other word) depending on the subject matter she can act like she's 20, or five, she's going to be 28 soon and she still has trouble telling time doing math, reading............and a bunch of other things, yet she can still understand what death is, what love is, she knows about sex, it just depends on the person.

my mother is extremely over-protective of her, she's so used to doing things for her, she wont let her try to do something,I've had many fights with her about what my sister is capable of, hell if it were up to my mom she would still be using baby forks to eat her food with.

the actors did an amazing job............i love this movie, because it shows that just because your disabled it doesn't mean that you can't have a "normal" life.

anyone that says this movie is offensive to those that are mentally disabled, has obviously never really spent time with someone who is, I've spent my whole life around them, (I was even a coach for the special Olympics)and everyone single one of them has loved this movie

So you are not handicapped nor are you close to anyone who is, yet it is "inaccurate and offensive" and you're basing this off what? Your immense amounts of experience with people like that or your overall snobbery?
First off that is the best way to explain mental retardation..as someone who is a six year old trapped in an adults body.
BTW I don't know if you've been around six year olds but they rarely can grasp the concept of high school levels, sex, and living alone, all which the main characters did. She even passed her regular HS course if you remember.
So how about as no one "close to anyone who is" handicapped and not being handicapped yourself, you just shut your mouth, thanks!
