What part made you cry and what part was the funniest

I recently watched only a small portion of this film. For the most part it was rather over the top, full of unlikely circumstances and character actions and reactions.

And I wondered about the casting of Keaton and Juliette Lewis. And then there was THEIR scene, and it was for me the scene for which they both were cast. The scene was after the other sister's wedding, during their wedding reception at the golf course. At one point Carla and her mother get into an argument, and Carla runs out of the room and down to the golf course, her mother chasing her in a golf cart. Down on the golf course Elizabeth (Keaton as the mother) catches up with Carla, and Carla goes into this emotional defense of her love for Daniel, and she declares her independence from her mother's controlling and overly protective inclinations.

This scene was perhaps the most effective, best-performed, most beautifully paced single scene that Juliette Lewis ever played before a camera. Garry Marshall should be commended for wringing that performance out of her, or at least for leaving her alone to make it happen. And the particular dialogue of that scene, the lines as written, were perfectly written, something that can't be said about many other scenes of the movie.

The funniest part is when Daniel and Carla are in the train station and he sits her down then loudly tells her (in the direction of the man sitting next to her) how he always sits there and he would be able to if there was no one sitting there. Then the guy gives him a look, gets up and finds a new seat.

That was really funny.

I really don't think this is a sad film but if I had to name a subject it would be the mother's inability to see Carla as a woman who just wants to live her life.

I have been thinking about this and I think there is a bit of hidden jealousy there. Carla is so beautiful and has such a light and everyone loves her, where as the mother is a witch and everyone seems to just tolerate her because y'know, she is in charge. People area afraid of her and she knows this. She wants to be loved as Carla is loved.

I can't believe nobody mentioned the very ending scene!

As a mom with a special needs child, I find so much of this film both moving and humorous, and very touching. Still, the ending scene chokes me up every time! When the entire wedding party is gathered outside the church waiting for Daniel and Carla to hop in the car and drive off into the sunset... but Danny looks preoccupied and a little anxious and is telling everyone to wait just a moment. Suddenly we hear a little music, then we see a shot of the back of Danny's head as he looks up the street. He steps back a bit, and then we see past him...

Whenever that marching band comes over that hilltop I get goosebumps and a huge lump in my throat, and I cry every time. When the movie is on TV, I tell myself I'll only tune in for awhile and not watch the entire thing. Still, I always watch to end anyway... not only because the movie is so wonderful, but so I can see that scene at the very end.

"This is my present for my bride!"

I thought it was funny when Danny was introducing Carla to the people he knows from the band at the University and he says, "And you see that guy over there? His name's Wally but they call him Walkin Wally" then Carla says, "Why?" and Danny says, "I don't know?"

Saddest part is of course when everyone was laughing at the country club and Carla gets really upset- then she's depressed because he has to leave to go to Florida and doesn't think she's going to see him again....

I like the very end as well. I had a special needs uncle. He was much more involved than the two portrayed in this movie, but he taught my brother and I some of our most important life lessons.

I thank God each and every night for sending our uncle to our family.

I also like when Danny is throwing marshmallows at Carla from the rafters of the church. Great movie. I love it.
