The fact that Riggs has short hair and the fact that he doesn't smoke in this movie really makes this feel off

I know that these are smaller details, but it just makes Riggs feel like he is not Riggs here. I get it that the character has mellowed out by this point in his story, but it really is like having Indiana Jones with no fedora and no whip.

sure. i've never gone looking for the reasons why. but this definitely just feels like Mel Gibson being a movie star and not the character Riggs.

it's not part of the long hair trilogy, it's a bone thrown to fans who just wanted more after the trilogy concluded

I had no problem with this.

I look at photos of my dad when I was a baby... he used to have a beard, was about 30 pounds heavier and wore thicker glasses... now he doesn't have a beard, has lost weight and got lasik (only uses lighter glasses for reading)... just like Riggs he also used to smoke, he doesn't anymore.

I recall that throughout the movie I was reminded of elite athletes who are on their last legs but can still do amazing stuff (just not as often as they used to - which was an issue touched upon during the movie like when Riggs tells Murtaugh that he faked an injury because a kid was beating him up in a boxing sparring session but that it wasn't the kid who was actually beating him... he felt he was like half a step behind from his usual self).

Mel Gibson's mullet is what made the first three movies so great.

No mullet, no Lethal Weapon.
