.....it's the one I would reach for first for a rewatch. It has everything. The final fight between Anakin and Obi Wan was everything I could have asked for. Anakin completely turning towards the end of the film was masterfully done. I like all the films on some level. (the sequels are the weakest) But this film right here. Nothing in Star Wars since has come close to it greatness.
I do enjoy the prequels. Always did. The Ewoks bother me more than Jar Jar. Even when I was 12 and saw ROTJ for the first time I thought it was the stupidest silliest Star Wars film. So dumb.
Wait....you think Phantom menace is better than ROTS??? No way. I like it but ROTS has everything I could want in a SW film. I love Rogue one also but still like ROTS more. The Last Jedi was not all that good. It was ok.
As for a New Hope. Who doesn't like it? But still ROTS is just chock full of so many good scenes...
Well just like Jar Jar was the object of much hate in TPM. I HATED the Ewoks even more. They were stupid and silly. There was much laughter during the 1983 screening I went to. I was 12 and I wasn't laughing. I was smirking the whole time and thinking how stupid it was. 41 years later I still think it's an awful film. People say to me...yeah but what about the Death Star scenes and Darth And Luke fight???? I'm like What about them?? They don't save the film for me. Han solo was also turned into a complete Joke in the film.
I saw ROTJ as a kid and loved the ewoks, so nostaligia clouds things. It's definitely the weakest of the originals, doesn't hold a candle to the masterpiece of Empire Strikes Back.
What's funny is that you can see the beginnings in ROTJ of all the babyish stuff that went into overdrive in the Phantom Menace - all those muppets in jabba's palace, that monkey lizard thing that sits next to jabba that laughs like a retard, the ewoks etc.
It was like opening the floodgates of hell when they gave Lucas CGI because now he could have random shit flying, walking and farting all around the screen in every god damn shot. Just crazy the world he created in those prequels, random ass stuff everywhere.
Haha. True. Though I didn't love TPM. I didn't hate it either. But yeah he continued the silly shit from ROTJ into TPM. He cut down on it for AOTC and ROTS was pretty dark all the way through.
Though I didn't love TPM. I didn't hate it either.
That about sums it up. I think if you forget that TPM is meant to be related to the original trilogy (to which it doesn't resemble at all in terms of look and tone) then it's a solid action/space adventure. I mean that end lightsabre fight between 3 Jedi is something else.
I've made peace with the prequels. I hated them because they weren't like the originals, but I accept them as good spectacles and also when compared to the films that have come out since.

That's right, it made a huge difference to get all the farts and jar jar stuff out, and put in more mature stuff. I still hated that kid in Attack of the Clones, he was just as bad as jar jar.

Well I didn't really mind the look of the prequels. I think they did a good job with the tech and decor..there was just more of it.
I definitely did not expect OT type of story structure at the time so maybe that is why I liked them more. Abrams tried to do a new hope type of structure with rise of Skywalker and it fell flat. He tried to make Rey, Poe and Finn the new trio but it was just too late in the game for that ....
You're right about the jj abrams films. They were just remakes of the originals with a more diverse leading cast.
One thing I find funny is the rivalry online between the prequel fans and sequel trilogy fans. Before that, it used to be the original trilogy fans arguing with prequel fans haha. I do side with the prequel fans over the sequels, but I guess they now know how we feel, so it's funny that way.
