Neve Campbell horribly miscast INCLUDES ENDING SPOILERS!!!

CONTAINS MAJOR ENDING SPOILERS!!!!!!!
Wild Things is a good film and the plot is fun and twisty. However, Neve really ruins it for me. The role I think intended to be a dizzy blonde character but due to Neve's hot-property status at the time it's obvious that they tried to mould her into a role for which she was clearly not suited. Neve has a quiet intensity and aura of intelligence. Blonde, mouthy and dumb-looking she definitely aint. So the big reveal wasn't as mind-blowing as it might have been had the likes of e.g. Jaime Pressly played the role

Hmmmmm...Totally disagree. I think Neve did a great job at playing Suzie. She's definitely the hottest 'trailer trash' punk I have ever seen and I couldn't imagine anyone else playing her part

reply

BTW
am I only one who think Suzie was 90s Lisbeth Salander ?

Sidney will die or not but I'd love to see Neve's mainstream films

reply

I couldn't see anybody play Susie BUT Neve.
I thought she did an awesome job.

I thought Neve Campbell was well cast.

OK, I completely disagree. Neve was NOT "horribly miscast."

How in the hell did you arrive at the idea that Suzie was intended to be a "dizzy blonde character?" Seriously???

The whole point was to make it look (at first) as if Suzie was homely and rough around the edges. They never wanted her to be "the hot chick"--that's what Kelly was there for. They WANTED that stark contrast between the two of them.

And her blonde hair at the end was a DISGUISE; she's supposed to be dead, remember? It wasn't meant to infer that Suzie was really a bimbo all along! I mean, c'mon, they blatantly spell it out for you, dude: Suzie can fix cars, she reads insightful books like 'Death on Credit', she knows how to sail boats, etc.

The fact that you find Neve has a "quiet intensity and aura of intelligence," should only convince you more that she was properly cast as someone who'd mastermind that whole plot!

Jamie Pressly, though a good (if not obvious) choice for trailer trash, would have been LESS convincing as a brilliant kingpin, if you ask me.

Sorry, but I think you're WAYYY off when it comes to this.

Out of all the options back then, was she the absolute BEST choice for the role? Maybe you can argue that, but horribly miscast she was definitely not!

Hope this helped change your mind three years later, LOL.

Heheh. Thanks Gimme_a_jeep for reviving this old post :)

First, let me clear up a misunderstanding. I wasn't saying that Neve is meant to be blonde - I never thought that the hair at the end was her natural hair colour. I'm saying that she should have done a better job of playing the part of white trailer trash up until the big reveal in order to add more gravitas to the twist. Having her portrayed as blonde up until the end (contrastingly wearing dark hair) would have helped.
Neve is an actress of quiet intensity - in real life she was a childhood ballet prodigy but she gave it up to become an actress, she has the appearance of steely intelligence. Now had the role merely called for someone capable of hatching a mastermind plot, I agree she would be top of my list. However, the role called for a duality in performance. Remember, you are not meant to guess she is a genius UNTIL the end! In this case, she would be the last person I would hire for the role if I was casting.

Now you realise that this a thriller full of twists, don't you? You know the revelation that Neve is a criminal genius is meant to be a TWIST? A good twist you don't see coming. It makes your head spin and jaw drop as you are forced to reevaluate everything that you have just seen. It subverts (not confirms) our expectations. You're not meant to know she is capable of doing up her shoelaces, let alone hatching such a brilliant plot. A twist like that works best if she has been shown to be the opposite until the big reveal.
What I'm suggesting is that the twist should have been hidden better, in plain sight, in the books she reads etc, so it makes sense in hindsight but is not obvious on first viewing.

Also, in order for her plan to work, she needed everyone to like her quickly, to find her superficially charming and sexually alluring, yet believe her to be naive, gullible and easy to dispose of without causing a stir.
She would have nothing to gain from inventing a persona that was too close to her actual personality. That she came across as frumpy, emo-like and half-way intelligent makes no sense from a story-telling perspective. In short, yes, I agree she looks perfectly capable and this is exactly why she was wrong for the role. Jaime Pressly (as do many actresses) has the advantage of being able to act superficial and dumb but I could also believe perfectly as a criminal mastermind.

Now do you understand my point?

To illustrate further:

ENDING SPOILER FOR DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS (GREAT FILM, WATCH IT BEFORE YOU READ AND IT MIGHT HELP YOU UNDERSTAND MY POINT):
Imagine if the mark had been portrayed as sleek, intelligent, confident and quick witted with someone like Catherine Zeta Jones or Natalie Portman in the role. The twist would not have worked at all!

I would have replaced Neve with Alyssa Milano. Denise and Alyssa going at it is what dreams are made of.

This.

Dizzy blonde character who reads Louis-Ferdinand Celine? That doesn't sound very dizzy to me.

Yeah I think Neve was miscasted I really don't care for her that one face she makes all the time drives me crazy. I love this movie and I think someone else should have definitely played Suzy. Just like I love Scream but she ruined it for me big time!!!

I'm in the 'Neve was great' camp. The only other actress I can see in this role is a young Angelina Jolie.
