What was Wade doing when he got shot?

He is unarmed. He is a medic. Why is he charging a hill at a machine gun nest?

Makes no sense. If he was running to help somebody who was down it makes sense. So why didn't they do the story that way?

reply

They way they were attacking, they needed every man moving forward. That included Wade.

reply

In that case Upham should have moved too instead of staying behind and watching the fight..!

reply

Unfortunately Upham had zero combat experience, Captain Miller made a terrible judgement call bringing him on the mission.

reply

True, but he needed a translator and his two were killed days ago..! :)

According to Wiki:

'Allied medics serving the European and Mediterranean areas usually carried the M1911A1 pistol while those serving the Pacific theater carried pistols or M1 carbines. When and if they use their arms offensively, they then sacrifice their protection under the Geneva Conventions.'

Perhaps Wade did have a weapon on the hill but either way, he was damn unlucky. The scene shows the injustice of warfare.

reply

I am surprised people think he got shot.

Look at his wounds when they gather around. Those are grenade shrapnel wounds. Remember the scene when nades were flying back and forth ? Yep.

So even if you're a medic, a grenade landing nearby is mute to your rank/purpose as a soldier.

reply

People like you piss me off to no end. You're the movie equivalent of conspiracy theorists, always seeing some bullshit that never existed, convinced that everyone else is wrong.

Wade was killed by machine gun fire. He was hit 3 times.
The movie makes that very clear, we even see the hit-pattern and the exit wound described by another soldier confirms this as well.

It wasn't fucking shrapnel.

reply

So why was this unarmed peacenik charging a MG nest? Why was he not following behind in case somebody needed a medic?

Militarily it makes no sense.

reply

It made no sense especially in light of Captain Miller almost forcibly stopping Wade from exposing himself to help Caparzo during the earlier German sniper attack in Neuville. Miller never actually ordered Wade to participate in the assault at the radio tower. In the hasty preparation, Wade was the only soldier never addressed or even mentioned by Miller. Wade thus acted unilaterally. He had been an impulsive character and never considered the risks he was taking to treat wounded comrades while the bullets were flying in other scenes. I guess the writers wanted a powerful and unjust death to build the tension critical to propelling the climactic ending. And, man they sure got it with Wade’s death scene.

reply

That's a really good observation, you're right, he never addressed him in any way.
It's like he forgot about him and Wade just did his own thing.

reply

I know. Just wanted to correct someone's nonsense.

As for your original question: "So the movie can happen!"
It's simply lazy writing, don't overthink it.
