Why war movies suck, including this great one:

The answer is simple: the helmets.

I can hardly ever recognise anyone! I really struggle to attach any particular moment of action or piece of dialogue to a specific character. The max for me is usually about 4 guys by the end of the film that I can recognise, and there's always more than four. During the action scenes it's beyond impossible to have the slightest clue what the hell is happening to who. It's always just endless minutes of gunfire, explosions, soldier running, soldier dying, repeat, repeat, repeat. I get so bored I find myself thinking about other things while I stare blankly at the screen and wait till the end to figure if anyone I might recognise is still alive.

Saving Private Ryan is supposed to be one of the best war films ever made and I felt nothing for any of the characters throughout the entire thing. I really wanted to enjoy it, and I blame it on the helmets and the regularly inaudible dialogue. If you can't see the faces, and you can't hear what they're saying, it's really hard to care.

One of my favourite films is memphis belle - you can't recognise anyone for the oxygen masks.

It seems you use hair color and style to recognize people, more so than most.

One nice thing about the helmets is that they help to identify each nation's armies.

Thank you, this movie sucked.

Maybe war movies aren't your genre, then? Especially if you're having difficulty distinguishing who's who in the movie.
Spielberg's camera framing and use of close-ups in many of the dialogue scenes made it pretty clear, to me. And the battle scenes were made to be confusing and chaotic on purpose. He wanted to make them as close to real battle as he possibly could.

"Oh yeah, one more thing....where can I get a pizza?."

I thought you were going to say all the German demonizing / poor Jew scenes.

Sounds like you have the same problem my mom does.

You just have to go into the movie with recognizing people in your mind. Know that there's going to chaotic scenes later, so use the slow dialogue moments at the beginning and in-between the find consistent things on each character to recognize them by. Like this one guy has a mustache, this one guy has a bony face, one guy has blonde hair, one guy has certain colors on.

Jurassic Park is famous for that, having all their character color coded lol.

Helmets were one thing, but you could've watched this with subtitles. I watched it on TV and there were no subtitle options available. As such, I only understood like 40% of the dialogue.

If that's your reasoning. It isnt that War Movies suck.
Its just that YOU suck at following the action.
