The sandwiches and black coffee

Not only did they look delicious, but they seemed very "1940's", if that makes any sense. I have vivid memories of my grandmother making coffee and sandwiches like that; piled high with meat and slathered in real butter. And piping hot coffee from a similar iron kettle. In this world of vegan food trends and gluten-free everything, it seems like hearty, delicious food like that is practically extinct.

"Oh yeah, one more thing....where can I get a pizza?."

People used to eat with much less guilt, yet there were far fewer obese children, men, and women than today.

I'm 62 and my grandparents always ordered coffee with every meal when they went out. Not coke, not a beer and certainly not wine.

I could never understand when I ate with them because some foods went better with coffee than others. I did not normally like a hot beverage with a meal so I would get a soft drink.

I remember a line from the film Little Caesar. They had just robbed a gas station at the beginning of the film and stopped to eat in a diner. They ordered "spaghetti and coffee for two". Somebody started a thread here on it talking about how bad those things go together but that was how Americans ate in the 1930s.

Coffee was with every meal not just for breakfast.
